I used to be a wreath girl and I had a wreath for every season. Over the past year or so something has happened and I’ve changed…. and my door has sat since winter with no wreath. For the past few Falls I have used a corn husk wreath I found 5 years ago at Homegoods. I’ve loved it but I was ready for something a little smaller scale this year, so I created a copper Indian corn bohemian door hanging.
This project was ridiculously inexpensive as well as ridiculously easy. I actually had no intention of making anything for the door, but it all sort of just fell into my lap last week. I was shopping in a thrift shop and came across some vintage lace at a great price. Score! Well on my way home I stopped at a local garden center for pumpkins and saw that they had Indian corn for just $1 an ear. They had several varieties, much like this….

I purchased 3 red ears and immediately knew my plan! A couple weeks ago while traveling to Vegas I had picked up the latest Martha Stewart Living which featured black painted Indian corn. I had never thought of painting or changing the look of the corn, but that magazine made me think about it. The red color of my corn was a beautiful deep rusty red, and I already owned a tub of copper gilding wax I had gotten from Catfish Studios.
I simply dipped my finger into my tub of wax and rubbed it onto my ears of corn until I had it all pretty much covered. Next I cut 3 pieces of lace approximately 12″ long and tied one around the tops of each ear of corn. I cut 3 more longer strands longer in length, around 18-24″ each, tying one end to the top of each ear, and bringing the other 3 ends together and tying in a knot with a loop to hang them by. Finally, I hung them to a screw that’s always been on my door as you can see below.
I love the bohemian look of these, and also love that they were so inexpensive to create! This is also a fun project to do with kids… My kids thought the gilding wax was pretty magical. 🙂
Have a great day! (I am holding back all of my corny puns right now just for you…)
