Happy Wednesday, my friends! This week is just flying by for us at Casa Bustamante… Monday was Sawyer’s band concert, yesterday Emmy and her friend worked on their talent show routine for Friday, and I’ve spent the rest of my waking hours working on the blog and at J. Crew. I am not complaining though- it’s all things I enjoy! Today I waned to share some gifts for her, which truthfully is my own Christmas list that I gave Chris when he asked for ideas. Along with that, I wanted to share a story from 15 Christmases ago…. Alas, I do not have photos from that Christmas, but hopefully my words can convey. Picture it, New Orleans, 2002. Chris and I lived in the back apartment on the bottom floor of an old blue victorian on Magazine St. It was a quirky old home with lots of space and character and we shared it with our beloved beagle. Chris was working retail at the time and was not going to be able to travel for the holidays, and I was working at a local gym as a membership representative and had volunteered to work the day after Christmas since I planned to stay in New Orleans and spend Christmas with my boyfriend. It was going to be the first Christmas of many that we would spend together, and I wanted it to be special… I planned an elaborate Christmas eve meal of Duck L’Orange, and we ate and drank wine and watched Christmas movies that night.
Now before I go on, I need to set the scene a bit. Chris had asked me for a Christmas list, and all I really wanted was to be engaged… I knew I wanted to marry him. Being me, however, I made him the most elaborate Christmas list. It read something like this…..”Waffle iron, ring, bread machine, ring, book I wanted, ring, another book I wanted, ring, Anthropologie sweater, ring, Belladonna manicure, ring, pajama pants, ring….” You get the point, right? It was a long list and every couple of lines it had “ring” in there, just in case he missed it the first five times.
Ok, so back to the story…. On Christmas morning we exchanged gifts, and I was thrilled! I just knew that I was going to get that ring! I gave Chris his gifts and he game me mine, including the waffle iron, bread machine, every book title I had listed…. I received every single thing on my list. What I didn’t receive was a ring. I was devastated, and decided to just act like an ungrateful brat. I am not proud of my behavior, but it’s what I did! I sat on the sofa in my pajamas and sulked. Chris announced that he was going to take a shower. “Fine.” “Is there anything I can do to make you feel better,” he asked. “Nope.”
He left and took is shower and I was left pouting on the sofa. When he returned he asked once again, “Are you sure there is nothing I can do to make you feel better?” “Nope.” He then came behind me and asked, “How about this?” as he held out the ring box. It was his grandmother’s ring and unbeknownst to me, his mother had sent it to him so he would have it for Christmas Day.
And that, my friends, is the story of how Chris and I got engaged on Christmas Day in 2002.
Every year since then, when it comes time for making my own Christmas list, we have a laugh about the list that I created for him that year. In that way, making my Christmas list always feels special to me because of that memory. As I formulated ideas of what I wanted this year and got ready to share that list with you, I thought you might appreciate the story for a little holiday humor… at my expense. 😉
Now let’s check out what I asked for this year! I’ve listed the items below with links for you.
Against All Grain: Meals Made Simple & Celebrations: I love the recipes that Danielle shares on her blog; they are clean, healthy, and gluten free. Her books contain several recipes not otherwise available and they look enticing to me!
Natural Blue Celestine Crystal: After my rose quartz on my nightstand worked so well for my fertility, I am trusting in the rocks! This blue crystal is beautiful, will look fabulous on my coffee table, and is said to relieve stress and anxiety. Currently, I feel like it could easily have a place in my life.
Polished Pout Trio of Nudes: I love using lip gloss, and am a fan of soft and nude type colors. These are toxin free and contain the antioxidant power of vitamin E so you can look great while doing something healthy for your body.
Instant Pot: I am so late to the instant pot party, and with a new baby coming, I know that convenience and quick cook times will rock my world. I’ve already pinned some recipes for when I have an instant pot of my own!
Present Over Perfect: I have been dying to read this book and take a better look at how I live my own life. I am a huge fan of the library, but this is one I know I will want to keep on hand for reference.
Tripod for my Iphone so I can make videos: Maybe? I mean, maybe I will be more motivated to share videos if I have a tripod and don’t have to sit there holding it awkwardly. It could also be great for instagram stories.
Himalayan Salt Lamps: I would love to use one of these in my bedroom and one in either our living or dining room. They help purify the air and they look rather lovely doing it.
New Balance Varsity Sneaker: Love the touch of silver these have on the “N.” I actually really wanted the new ones they came out with that are all silver, but they didn’t have them in my size, so I came up wth an option B, and I think I might like them even more in the end!
The Famous Capri Blue Volcano Candle: Everyone and their mother loves this candle! I was introduced to it in 2003 and I still love it to this day… I am burning the last of the one I have now, so I asked for a replacement and I love this pretty blue jar.
Matty M Leggings: I have tow pairs of these from Costco and live in them…. With a growing bump, I want to get a couple of pairs in the next size up. They are so comfortable and feature a nice wide waist band.
Stud Earrings: With a baby coming, I know little hands will be reaching for my ears, so dangling earrings will be put away temporarily and I don’t have too many studs I love. I found all of these on etsy and love the different options: rose quartz studs, wrapped crescents, geometric hearts, star trio.
Under Armour Cold Gear Leggings: I am still walking 4 miles a day about 5-6 days a week right now in the wee and cold hours of the morning, but my current sz S pants are probably not going to cut it for too long. I will be needing some in a larger size, and I absolutely love Under Armour for their compression quality as well as protection against the cold.
And that’s all I asked for this year…. well, OK, not all I asked for. This year I also slipped in “rights to name the baby whatever I want.” I think I am pressing my luck with that one. 😉
