A Simple Mount Makeover

One of my favorite Saturday morning activities is, duh, yard sales and flea markets.  A little while back I found this awesome antler mount….

I loved the size and loved the leather on it, but was not a fan of the wood on the plaque.  I lightly sanded it and applied 3 coats of General Finishes Milk Paint in Snow White, for a fresh clean look and contrast to the leather.  I used a small angled artist brush to apply so that I could create a neat line at the seam between the two.  After I painted it, I pulled out some rub n buff and gilded the border.  I happily hung it in my dining room, where it then was decorated for Halloween with a crow.

And here is a better look at the gilding…

I love how the white and gold contrast to the rustic leather and also the charcoal gray walls!  And this guy will definitely be decorated for the upcoming holiday season, too.  Stay tuned!

Now I am off to do some Christmas shopping with my mom!  Wish us luck!

I bet hunters across America are dying over everything we’re doing to their trophies to pretty them up. ha! John cringed when I asked what he thought about painting our antler chandelier white with gold tips. Blasphemy in his book!! I’m on board with you though…yours turned out great.

I like these mounts but I can’t have one in my house because I can’t deal with my brother mocking me. He doesn’t understand that antlers are different than big giant furry deer heads.
