Adding Space with a Storage Platform Bed

Adding Space with a Platform Bed

Sawyer’s bedroom is in the basement of our house, just off the family room.  If I am being honest, it’s easy for me to sort of forget about it because of its location and the fact that he is always content with the status quo.  However, it was clear to me that we needed more storage and organization in there.  Kids have a lot of things and by the time they reach the teenage years, they’ve accumulated years worth of stuff.  In addition to needing a place to put all of his items, he also desperately needed more floor space.  His room was feeling a bit crowded and although he mainly plays on the Wii and XBox these days, he still needs a place to play on the floor as well.  The track shelves we recently added helped us place all of the mementos that matter to him, but we also needed additional storage for blankets, sheets, etc.  When I saw the platform storage bed that The Futon Shop offered, I knew it was the perfect solution to our dilemma. (Thank you so much to The Futon Shop for providing us with the bed and mattress topper for this post.  I was not otherwise compensated and all opinions are my own.)

As you probably are aware by now, I have been very careful in selecting new products for our home and want to make sure that I do the best I possibly can with eco-consciousness while providing my family with a comfortable and beautiful home.  When I read the about page of The Futon Shop and saw that the founder is working to create chemical free products, I was thrilled!  It is hard to find sustainable wood furniture that is affordable as well, and The Futon Shop does just that.

When we discussed more floor space for Sawyer I made the suggestion that he could downsize his bed as he was sleeping on a queen sized mattress on an old metal bed frame.  He was NOT at all for that idea.  He may be 4’10” and 90 pounds, but he loves to lay in the middle of a queen sized bed, surrounded by pillows and blankets.  It was a non-negotiable for him.  With that in mind, I knew that the only way that we could give him more floor space would be to find a storage bed that could help us eliminate another piece of furniture in his room.  Additionally, Sawyer knew that he did not want a headboard.  He loves to place his pillows right up against the wall and lean into them. The K Series platform bed ticked all of the boxes for our needs and suited the masculine vibe in his bedroom.

His bedroom already has two different colored dressers- a wood midcentury piece in a warm walnut, and a taller midcentury piece that was stained or painted black at some point in its life.  His flooring is made of dark bamboo planks.  We selected the Cappuccino finish of the platform bed as it suited the darker tones of his flooring perfectly. Below you can see just how similar the bed and flooring are in color.

As I mentioned earlier, one of the needs we had in this room was more floor space.  With these two large roomy drawers, we were able to remove items from his old cubby shelf and store them in the bed.  Once we emptied that piece we took it out of the room and moved his long dresser to underneath the window.  He now has SO much more space to sit or play on the floor.  It also makes the flow into his room so much more clear.

We actually have a ring toss game on his door that we often all play together as a family, and this open space allows us much more room to play. 🙂 You can see it below on his door.  We close the door to play the game and now we have a nice clear row, which is great because some of us like to really swing our arms.

The underneath of the other side of the bed stays clear, but The Futon Shop also offers trundle beds which can fit underneath. For now, we just put Sawyer’s poufs he likes to sit on when on the floor underneath the bed.

In addition to style and storage, this bed also eliminates the need for a box spring, and I for one find platform beds SO much more comfortable!!!!  I love having my mattress directly on top of the platform, and I knew Sawyer would, too.  Here you can see the bed after we set it up before we added his mattress.

After we added his mattress, we also added an organic wool & cotton mattress topper from The Futon Shop.  As I mentioned, Sawyer likes to lay with loads of pillows, so I knew he would love to have the added cushioning of a mattress topper.

After we got that in place, Sawyer and Wilder tested it out. 😉  Wilder loved bouncing around on its softness.

He also loved the box the mattress topper came in, but that’s beside the point.

We are all so pleased with how this room is coming together, and this bed helped us achieve our mission of more storage while minimizing the furniture footprint in the room.

We still have a couple of minor changes to make to this room, but it’s getting closer to being finished!  Thank you again to The Futon Shop for providing us with an organic mattress topper and a sustainable sourced wood storage bed.  We love supporting brands that care about our planet!

What a perfect solution for his room. I love how their are drawers on one side and he can stash his bean bags under the other.
