Updated Note on December 27th, 2010:
This post was by far my most popular and one of my best projects this past year.  I look at this piece as the one that made this blog.  I started this blog way before I really understood what a blog was, and how to even use it.  Around the time I posted this piece was around the time that I figured out the whole bloggy network and community.  I think this might be one of the first pieces I linked up to parties, and it was received with overwhelming response, and from then on, I was hooked!   So thank you to everyone who ever stopped by this blog to see this piece, and maybe became a follower, or just left me a sweet comment.  You’ve made me smile, and you’ve made me keep on trucking!  Looking forward to 2011!

Original Post:
Lately, I am really into these French pieces and trying new things on them, like this chalkboard paint sideboard I recently did. This time, it’s a similarly shaped sideboard, of which naturally I forgot to take a “before” shot. So I will break down the process for you after that!
Here it is after the top was partially stripped and the base was primed.

And here is phase 2 (well, really 3!). Here you can see that the top was thoroughly sanded after it has been stripped so it was down to the bare wood. The base had been painted Sherwin Williams’ Rapture Blue, which was a little bright at the time, but I had plans!

Here it is now!

The top was stained in Minwax’s Provincial (how fitting!), and the body was distressed and then stained with the same stain. The top was also given a tung oil finish to keep it low luster. I love it and am so happy with how the color turned out, though I admittedly had a moment of self doubt once the first coat of paint was on!

I love this piece. I have the same pulls on my kitchen cabinets. I have been told I should replace them to update my kitchen. I always say NO because I like them. My house was built in the 70s so kinda funny that is what they installed. Anyway, your paint is awesome. I was wondering if you could tell me how you like to apply your stain to the paint part of the furniture. I have been having trouble making it look right. It seems sticky and hard to rub off.

Tracy- For this piece in particualy I applied the stain a little differently. What I normally do is dip a rag into my stain and just rub on in the direction of the paint strokes and wood grain. I tried that with this piece, but because I used a darker stain it was not working- the stain was drying rather quickly so it was looking sloppy. I ended up using a brush and brushing on a pretty thick coat of stain in very small sections at a time and then wiping off as I went. For instance, I brushed the stain on one drawer, wiped off the stain, and then went to the next drawer. The sides were the most challenging as they had the largest surface area, so i did it in about 4-6″ strips if that makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I really like the color. In the olden days, rubbing a stain on a painted piece of furniture was called antiquing. They even sold kits-paint and stain in one box. So funny. We’ve come a long way from that-thank goodness.

The doors and corner are a tiny bit different but the hardware and everything else are exactly the same. I saw your post over at the Shabby Nest. My piece desperately needs a coat of paint (she stained it cherry, yuck) you have inspired me, I will probably go distressed antique white and leave the top a wood tone. LOVE how yours turned out!

This is just for cutting for shelves, making benches, etc. Nothing too elaborate. My funds aren’t extravagant. Would a jig saw be the best tool or some other saw? Thanks for your advise.
