At the end of June when our blogger book club selected our July book, Kirby suggested a book her neighbor had written. I was honestly nervous, because you know how it goes when someone you know writes a book and you are petrified you won’t like it and then you have to review it…. I was scared to death it would be terrible. Until I googled the author, Charlie Lovett, and saw that he had just had a best seller and this was his next novel, First Impressions: A Novel of Old Books, Unexpected Love, and Jane Austen
This book crosses back and forth between modern day England and Jane Austen’s time. In today’s England, Sophie Collingwood is trying to solve what she believes is the murder of her uncle. Her uncle taught her to love and appreciate books, and Sophie’s love of books and Jane Austen sets her off on an exciting trail where she meets potential love interests, or perhaps devious men trying to get to her knowledge? As we step back into Austen’s time we see the development of her writing and her novels, and the relationships that guide her written words. Together the two stories weave an intricate story of friendship, mystery, and literary passion.
I absolutely LOVED this book and have told everyone I know to read it! I happen to love Austen, so that helps, too, but even so, it’s a well written novel with an interesting story worth reading. I will gladly read more from Kirby’s neighborhood author in the future without fear.
For August, we’ve selected The Light Between Oceans, which I first read about on Sharon’s blog. It sounded so interesting that I had it saved as one to read. My mom recently read it as well and loaned it to me, so I suggested this one to the group and they obliged.
I am about 100 pages in and loving it! Can’t wait to finish it!
Have a great Saturday!
