Blogger Book Club Review: I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You

Happy First day of March!  In like a lion and I am praying out like a lamb, because the winter lion has worn out his welcome.  But on the plus side, winter does allow for snuggling under a blanket with a good book.  But of course laying on the beach with a good book is rather enjoyable as well. 😉

Our February book was chosen by me, and I have to admit that I didn’t love it…

I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You is the story of Richard Haddon, a British artist, married to a beautiful French lawyer, and living in France with their 5 year old daughter.  This story is told from the perspective of Haddon, who begins by sharing his extramarital affair.  His wife, Anne, discovers his dalliance, and this book is truly the story of a desperate man, trying to win her back, and realizing just how in love he is with her.

I just wasn’t a fan of the entire situation which made the book hard for me to enjoy.  Years ago I worked as a personal trainer and discovered that two trainers (who were happily married to other people) were having a serious affair.  I came home devastated, telling Chris about it and crying.  I loved these people and worked with them on a daily basis, and just couldn’t understand how they could do such a thing.  Chris and I swore to each other at that moment that if we ever even had a wandering eye, we would immediately tell and talk about it and fix what was clearly wrong with us.  (Thankfully, we’ve never actually had to have those conversations!).  Anyhow, the point is that I do not handle news of extramarital affairs well, so I have trouble sympathizing with the main character.

I know, I know….womp womp…. The book was indeed well written and had it’s moments, but it just wasn’t for me.

So moving on to something I have heard some rave reviews about, we’ve jointly selected for March…

This one sounds like a psychological thrilled and I can’t wait to dive in this week!

Cassie I agree with you. I cannot understand how anyone can stand in front of God, their family and supposedly the one person they love most in the world and cheat. My sons told me I am so old fashioned but I don’t think that has anything to do with it. It is a throw away society for the most part and after they take on the responsibility of a spouse and maybe children they cheat. Where is the respect, the honor, the promise? It truly makes me sick. I have been married a very long time and thankfully both of us agree on this point.

i was not a fan of this book, either. Was it that the characters were self-absorbed? Not sure even that they were. I am going to finish it and write it on Thursday, I hope.

Sounds like this wouldn’t go over big with me, either–I have a hard time reading about affairs. Even when the author works hard to make us sympathize with and understand the people involved, I can never get past thinking how much I hate what they are doing! I read The Girl on the Train last month–so hard to put down! I don’t read thrillers much, but I love how this one constantly kept me guessing. Hope you like it!

oh man, i wanted to love girl on the train, but i found it predictable and repetitive. just finished the magician’s lie by greer mcallister, and loved it. bit whimsical, good story, keeps you intrigued. curious to see how you feel about girl on the train.

Are all the books you read new ones? Just wondering.
I buy hard backs from our thrift store for 50 cents and have luckily gotten hold of some pretty good ones, has broadened my taste of reading.
Recently I read twice in about 4 to 6 weeks. Read couple other books between. Home front by Kristin Hannah. The story is about a woman that has 2 children, married, has to go to Iraq in early 2005 as a helicopter pilot. Wow, it really tells us all so much about the horror of this despicable war and what our soldiers have to live with, men or women. Thought it was something more people should read and educate themselves about what our soldiers are having to go thru. Makes me very glad i signed a petition online to get our soldiers the mental health care they so desperately need but have been denied.
I will get book you were talking about at library just to see how I feel about it. If any of you can, please try to find Home Front, it’s quite an eye opening book. My husband noticed I was reading it again so soon and asked me why. I asked him little more about what he’d had to see in Viet Nam. We were married 3 1/2 weeks when he was sent to DaNang, Viet Nam with Jolly Green squadron, the helicopter crews that had to go over into DMZ’s to rescue shot down pilots. He was a flight engineer, the guy that let down hoist or saddle to lift pilots up to chopper. I was pretty scared about still having a husband. Luckily he wasn’t there for long, on TDY (temporary duty which was 4 months) as he was supposed to get out of Air Force in Aug. 69.
They tried to keep him in as he’d been in A/F for 9 yrs. but he got out since he’d have been sent to Korea for a year without us and we’d just been married. I had 3 small children when we married and we wanted to have one of our own, I was getting close to 30 and had female troubles.
I was so touched by this book, touched by what I read about what happens to our soldiers, it made me cry to know what they’re enduring over there but even worse when they come home. Sorry for intruding on your post.
I can certainly understand how people whom are devoted to their husband/family and marriage would feel reading about people who seem to take their marriage vows so lightly if at all. Why get married then?
My husband was an over road truck driver, mostly after all our kids were gone, we’d moved to MT and that was only job he could get at 50+. We were away from each other for weeks at a time. He said lot of guys talk about their wives and maybe themselves cheating, he was floored as he never doubted me or me him. We barely knew each other when we married. We had first date on 10/18/68, got married 11/30/68 and as I said he left 3 1/2 weeks later on 12/26/68. It was 2nd. marriage for both of us and we weren’t going to mess up. My kids think the world of him and use his name. I was so glad to read several of you were disturbed by the flagrant lack of moral loyalty. Good for you.
    Happy week

If you want to holler at me for intruding please do so at [email protected] Thanks
