Happy Friday- we survived the short week! We had a great week at casa Bustamante. Chris was off work this past week, and I think I have convinced him that we need to build our fire pit this weekend…. YAY!!!!! I can’t wait to sit around it and toast marshmallows and watch the kids catch fireflies. (I saw the first ones of the season Wednesday night!). May was so crazily busy, and then Memorial Day came and put me in full on summer mode. Then yesterday came and it was rainy and 55. Thanks for reminding me not to jump the summer gun too soon, Mother Nature.

Cora Cash is an American Heiress who travels to England with her mother at the turn of the 20th century as her mother is hoping to marry her into British royalty. On her own, Cora has a horse riding accident in the woods and as luck would have it, is discovered by a duke, whose dukedom is in financial ruin. We follow the story of their courtship, American wedding, and back to England where they will live. All along it’s clear that the Duke is hiding something (perhaps another woman, in the form of the glamorous Charlotte Beauchamp) from Cora, and we see Cora’s strong and stubborn character weaken. And all along, we wait to find what the Duke’s great dark mystery is…
I really really want to tell you that I loved this book. I loved the author’s writing, and as I was reading it was raving to friends about it. I loved the many characters and the mysteries they held. However, in a book, often the last impression is just as important as the first impression. And unfortunately for me, the ending was abrupt and didn’t sit well. It felt that the author rushed to complete it, and it didn’t feel like it was the darker ending she wanted, and frankly, that I wanted. I was almost expecting an ending akin to Kate Chopin’s Awakening, but instead was treated with a brief Disney ending. I actually reached the last page which happened to end at the very bottom of a page, and was confused when I went to flip and nothing was there- that WAS the ending?!?! This book was filled with beautiful writing, beautiful characters, and such amazing potential, but in the end, the anticlimactic ending ruined it for me. If you’ve read it, I would love to hear what you think!
Next month, read along with us as we discover a book my mother in law was reading and recommended. It sounded like a great dramatic mystery, which I love! I plan to dive into this one this weekend and am looking forward to it!
