Book Report: Before I Fall

Happy Friday!  I couldn’t be happier today is here, because it’s time for our school talent show tonight… Emmy is dancing in it, Sawyer is MC, and I am the chair so I am ready for it to be over. 😉 Anyhow, I’ve got a couple of recent reads to share with you and I thought I’d start with my book report for Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver.

before i fall

I was out shopping for Valentine’s Day for the kids and headed into Barnes & Noble and decided to grab a book or two for myself.  I walked by the “read it before it’s in the theater” (or something like that!) table and was intrigued.  What is it about knowing a movie is being made out of a book that automatically makes it seem more interesting?  I saw Before I Fall stacked on that table, and read the back cover of this young adult book.  (37 is still young adult, right?)

This book follows popular high school senior, Samantha Kingston, as she makes her way through February 12th, also known as Cupid Day at her school.  On Cupid day, the number of roses one receives from classmates publicly demonstrates one’s social rank.  Throughout her day, she receives several roses, plans out her first sexual encounter with her boyfriend which will happen that evening, and decides to attend a party with her friends.  Her behavior towards those on the low end of the totem pole leaves much to be desired… Samantha and her friends reminded me very much of mean girls.

That night on the way home from the party, there’s an accident and Samantha dies in the crash. However, she wakes up the next morning as if the day never happened, and once again it’s February 12th.  Samantha will relive this day 7 times in a row, and learns how her decisions and actions affect others.

I really enjoyed this book… I think it would be especially great for teenage girls, but I think there’s a lesson in it for all of us.  However, unlike Lauren, we only get one chance to live each day.  So do your best to live a life you can be proud of, and go to bed each night satisfied with you you are.

You can grab your copy of Before I Fall here.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend; I will be back next week with my review of Asylum.  It’s another creepy young adult book… I must be in age denial at the moment!  Happy weekend!

Sounds interesting! I just bought “Brooklyn” from the “in theaters now” table….you’re right, there is some attraction to books that have been made into a movie!

This is a favorite book among me and my kids! And if you want another great YA book that both my son and daughter and I loved it’s Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. Both Before I Fall and Elsewhere are books that stuck with us. That opened up conversations about good and bad and life and death.

    🙂 Linda

Have fun tonight Cassie! I’m in need of a few new books. Just got my hubby home from the hospital last week and he’s got a long recovery at home. I plan to do some reading in between my nursing duties. Hope tonight goes well for the kids! I had your phone number in my old phone which died and I lost all of my contacts. Would you email me your address and phone again? Thanks!

We obviously have similar reading lists. I actually got this one on a whim at the library last summer and it was a great read. Sort of bittersweet, but a great book, too.

I like your plan of attack: read the book before seeing the movie. I’m always doing the opposite 😀
