Boyish Blue Dresser & Your Opinion on a Headboard Makover PLEASE

I picked up this dresser last week while Chris was away.  For being such a little guy, it is solidly made and super heavy!  Since I didn’t have Chris to help me get it inside, it sat in my driveway until he came home as I was only able to heave it out of my car!  It was a free find, and not mny favorite style at all, but in town and free, which you just can’t beat.  I also got a nightstand from the same people which will be made over soon, too.
Because this is not my favorite style, I was not very inspired.  I will be honest here- I do not like dentil molding on furniture.  That’s the trim there just under the dresser top.  Not a fan.  I had no idea where I was going with this one, so I primed it with my blue tinted primer, and just picked a color that went with that.  I had some “Champion Blue” on hand by Ben Moore.  It’s a very boyish blue, I think.  I painted it with 3 coats of that, and then searched through my hardware stash (and yes, Cathy- I do have tons!  I should take a picture one day and show you, but it’s rather embarassing how much I have!!).  I kept the top knobs, and found some with a more nautical feel that complemented the original knobs well.  They were the winners!  Here is the dresser now with its new coat and jewels… I think it would be just perfect for a little boys nautical room, don’t you?  And I will admit, it is still not my favorite dresser in the world, but I always do girly and more grown up, so I thought maybe I should do this one with a little boy in mind.

Ok, and now onto where I would like your opinion.  Maybe you saw this project the other day over at The DIY Club.
headboard DIY 1Pin
Amy from The Idea Room created this headboard and used a Cutting Edge Stencil to add the painted detail.  Emmy already has a bed I love, but the headboard is nice and solid and I think it would look super with a stenciled design…. I am totally drooling on my keyboard now, just as I look at Amy’s bed.  The colors in her room now are pink, blue, and orange.  So here is the question… what color would you do the design?  Here are my choices:
1. Pale Pink like her walls which are Rosily by Sherwin Williams (might be too pale?)
2. Brighter Pink like her bedding
3. Orange like her vanity which is Orange Delicia by Mythic. (might be too much orange for me now)
4. Blue like her dresser which is Fairytale Blue from Ben Moore (This color gets my mom’s vote hands down!)
Here are a couple recent pictures of her room… I would love to hear your opinions! (And I know these pictures are not the best quality, but they were already on my computer and I am too lazy to go take new ones. )

i think it might be pretty with a tone-on-tone versus color + white. like a light pink background with a brighter pink outline. or the color of the dresser with a turquoise outline. whatever you end up doing will look beautiful i’m sure!

I don’t think you could go wrong with any of the colors…but I’m leaning towards dark pink, so there is cohesiveness with the bedding and walls. Let the dressers pop on their own. Maybe a throw pillow picking up those other colors?

I’m going with your mom on this one, the blue would tie it altogether. I vote blue for the background and creamy white for the stencil. Also, maybe a smaller stencil design would make the bed look bigger? I feel like the proportions on Amy’s headboard could be better (not that it isn’t great already but) if the stencil were smaller in scale? Hope that helps. Good luck!

I’d go with the wall color, as you see in Amy’s picture that’s sort of what she did, that way the stencil stands out…really cute bedroom for your daughter BTW!

My vote is either light pink like the walls (to keep it a more subtle detail), or blue to make it POP. Tough call!!! There’s a lot of pink & orange over there in the bed corner, so if you go for blue, you may consider adding a matching blue throw pillow or something to tie it in. Just a thought 🙂

I’m with mom on this one. But here’s a thought. I love the colors on her rug. How do you feel about the green in it? I think it’d be pretty and would bring it out. But that’d also mean introducing another color in. Or maybe not, the green’s already there.

I would say the same blue as the dresser (what color is that cause I LOVE it!. I think pink would be too much pink and I think orange would be too much orange. The blue would definitely balance things out. I like the idea of doing the blue background and then the stencils in a cream or white. That would be GORGEOUS!

I am sure whatever you do will be beautiful, you are so talented.

I love how the dresser turned out, and I think you were just right on the direction. Perfect for a little boys nautical or air plane room. Did you think about distressing it? I always lean towards the distressing, especially for kids rooms since it ends up that way anyways. 😉

I LOVE the idea of stenciling on the headboard. Out of your choices, I tend to agree with your mom and do the blue of the dresser. Did you think of picking up the slightly greenish yellow that’s in the rug?

I think the boy’s dresser turned out great. It will make some family very happy and will be the perfect piece for them.

As for the headboard, I’m going to have to go with your mom on this one. I say blue for sure. The pink on the walls would just get lost, and the orange is too close to the orange vanity. The bright pink would be my second choice, but my first is definitely the blue.

Perfect for a little boys room or playroom! I am torn between the blue and orange…pink is so pretty too..but would you get tired of one sooner than the other? Orange would for sure pull that color out of the rug! Good luck making a decision! 🙂

I’m not going to lie- I just gasped out loud when I saw that dresser. Since the rest of the room is very warm- I think a nice punchy blue to match that FREAKING GORGEOUS dresser would be a fun way to tie it in.

And cassie- I like how you did the dresser! Can’t beat free! Are you going to try to find a place for it in your house or sell it?

I think I like contrasting the light pink with a darker pink. I like how the orange vanity and blue dresser are unique items in the room. The darker pink would also make the fabric on the vanity seat pop! I love the colors in her room! What color orange is that? I’m wanting to paint an orange chair and that is great!

Wow! The boyish blue boy dresser is beautiful, Cassie! What a transformation on that one! I love it. The color and the hardware are perfect. This piece changed from a pumpkin to Cinderella (well I guess it should be pink for that) but you kow what I mean. I am going back and forth between the brighter pink and the blue for Emmy’s headboard. I think I like the brighter pink and then maybe get a little throw pillow in the blue for her bed. You’ll come up with the right choice. If Emmy every gets tired of that blue dresser you let me know. I’ll drive out and buy it from you.

I love the “Champion Blue” color. I’ll have to write that one down. Going to paint my son’s dresser, soon. Love it I tell ya! Love the hardware you picked out, as well. I have oodles of hardware too. A girl has to have choices 🙂 I just grab them when I’m at the Restore of Hobby Lobby’s 50 % off day.

As far as the headboard, hmmmm… I know most are saying blue but I’m going to go out on a limb and say the orange. It would pop with the vanity and rug! That rug is gorgeous!!! Hugs!

First of all I totally know what you mean by that style of dresser. But for free you always go for it! Your call on this being a “boy style” was right on. You did that piece so much justice and the color you chose is perfect!

I LOVE that rug you have in Emmy’s room. I don’t remember ever seeing that?? I have to go with orange for the headboard…

Wow that is a gorgeous blue! So vibrant! Makes me want to say things like port and starboard. Now the headboard dilema…At first I thought blue but I kind of like the idea of the darker pink. Or even maybe a toned down orange? I’m absolutely no help. Sorry. I guess it depends on if you are going for a monochromatic look or if you want pops of color.

My first choice would be to match the dresser. I love that color! Next choice would be to match the ruffly rose pillow on the bed. The headboard needs to stand out from the wall & vanity, both of which are big pieces on that wall.

And I do like the dresser. I have a bedroom set that has drawers like that, and it was good to see yours painted. It has sparked all kinds of great ideas . . . 🙂

I am really intrigued about how you finished the dentil molding on the dresser (I agree, also not my fave though you did it beautifully!). How did you sand it and did you prime and paint with a tiny brush? I feel like if I did it, there would be sloppy drips everywhere.

As long as the orange vanity is next to her bed, I would go with the orange. If it would make sense to switch the vanity and the dresser then I think the blue would look nice. I think there is so much pink going on in the room you wouldn’t even notice it if you used pink!

Okay, anyway, I vote blue like her dresser, too!

In addition, the repairs or replacements need to fit in your budget. If your insurance provider is covering the cost, the professional you choose should be able to contact the company and work out payment without involving you too much. If you do end up paying any of the bill, a good commercial roofing expert knows to ensure that you get the receipt so that you can deduct it from your taxes since this is a major business expense.roofing fort worth tx
