I thought it was high time I shared a little DIY project around here. This is a quick and easy redo involving a set of 4 Breuer chairs a friend of mine gave me. I am a huge fan of this chic style, but with her young family, it just wasn’t working. The original caned seats were torn and needed to be replaced with new seats. And if you aren’t sure what Breuer chairs are, here’s what they look like, courtesy of Houzz.
Aren’t they fabulous! The set I was given had two with arms, and two without. Two of the seats had holes, so I opted to replace all with new upholstered seats. I am not going to go into a ton of detail here, but if you need more you can click on this post, where I replaced caned seats in bentwoods.
Anyhow, these seats were a little easier to work with because they unscrew from their chrome base. I was able to remove the seats, cut out pieces of MDF to size and attach them to the seat, upholster and then just screw right back on! Another bonus of the seats coming off is that I didn’t have to cut a template like I did for the bentwoods. I was able to just trace the seat right onto my MDF, and then cut. Below you can see the seat laying on the MDF pre-tracing, and you can also see the chair without the seat in the background.
I chose a modern gray and golden yellow ikat fabric I purchased at Joann’s with a 50% off coupon to cover the seats. I love how it paired with the style of these chairs!
(Pardon the iPhone photo, but it’s the only shot I have of all 4!)
I brought them over to Sweet Clover, and happily they went to a new home right away! Here they are staged with a white French table….
Because these seats were more linear, it was much easier to create tight corners and cover the seats than it was on the circular seated bentwoods!
I love projects like these that are fairly simple but make a huge difference! Not only are the seats more comfortable, but they are also more durable, and now have their own unique style!
