Happy Friday, friends! I am so excited that the season for outdoor living is upon us. Our old house in Maryland had the most amazing wrap around porch with wonderful views, and our family loved to sit out there for dinner or play cards, and Chris and I enjoyed evenings with glasses of wine or craft beer. While I miss that porch greatly, that doesn’t mean there won’t be more of those magical moments in our new house. Instead of an expansive porch, our sixties rancher has a generously sized back patio that we’ve just started putting together so we can use it as a family. I’ve started making plans and purchases and today I wanted to share my ideas with you in this post, Budget Find Friday: Patio Decor & Plans. I am planning to share the final reveal with you the first week of June, so hopefully it will live up to the design I’ve created in my head.
love seat / pink awning stripe pillow / palm leaf lumbar / string lights / chair / black and white lumbar / coffee table fire pit / concrete planter / charcoal outdoor rug / boho pastel outdoor rug / peace sign / plastic dishes / table / chairs
Here is a little reminder of the space I am working with in reality.
As you can see, it has a nice long shape with plenty of room for a little seating area as well as a dining area. Let’s talk about the seating area first. While I honestly do not love the loveseat and chairs that we own (pictured in the design board above), there is absolutely nothing wrong with them so they’re staying. We have the Target Belvedere resin wicker pieces and they are in great shape. We purchased this set several years ago, and since then so many modern bohemian sets that I love so much more have come along (like this sectional from Opalhouse), but these are first world problems. Since we already own this set, and the shape is classic and the colors are neutral, I am spicing them up by adding new outdoor pillows.
I did a lot of shopping at Target, and found a perfect mix of inexpensive pillows there. I chose a few that would bring in the colors I wanted (black, white, and pink to coordinate with the front of the house) and mixed classic patterns with a little more boho. The pillows I selected for the love seat are pink and white cabana striped (only $14.99 each), and a black and white palm lumbar pillow ($19.99 each). For the chairs, I decided to go with a black and white mod stripe lumbar which seemed to fit the scale better than a full sized pillow.
On our old porch, I didn’t use outdoor rugs because they honestly just got dirty there, and our chickens “free range” all over them, if you know what I mean. However, our new patio has a couple of major cracks in it I’d like to hide and it needs to have clearly defined spaces since it’s sort of long. I would love to tear out this patio one day and replace it, but for now I am all about making use of the space we do have. To anchor the seating area, I brought home this Project 62 rug from Target, and it immediately made a huge difference! I chose this one for the color and modern pattern, as well as the size it was offered in (7×10 feet).
Lastly in the seating area, I would love to get a combination coffee table/firepit that we can use to set our drinks on, and also to roast marshmallows. Admittedly, this 4 foot concrete piece I am in love with is not a “budget” find at $429.99 but honestly, it’s not a bad price considering size and function. One day…
Alright, moving on to the dining area…
We did not actually have outdoor dining chairs at our last house since our porch was covered. We did have a table that we brought with us though. The previous owners actually left behind the picnic table seen in the photo above as well, but I prefer a table with chairs, so that will be going. As I was searching for outdoor chairs, I knew I wanted something pretty timeless and easy to clean, and something that could stand up to the elements. These tolix style chairs were only $90 for a set of 4! They are stackable which will minimize storage needs as well. I ordered two sets of 4!
I would love to add another outdoor rug underneath the dining table to help create a defined space. While I do not want the same rug as in the seating area, I would love something that coordinates well and adds a little color. This pastel bohemian rug by the Novogratz is just perfect! It brings in the pale pink from our front door and the pillows in the seating area, and adds a great graphic touch. Isn’t it just so pretty?!
I have not yet given a whole lot of thought to accessories since the big pieces are the most important, but I have thought about it a little bit. We brought our old cobalt blue planters with us, but now that we have an exterior color scheme, the blue isn’t working for me. I have someone purchasing them this weekend, and I would love to replace them with a concrete look planter or two from Target. Our back yard is shaded, so ferns would be lush and perfect in these planters.
String lights are a must-have on my list for any outdoor space. We left behind the string lights that we hung on our last house…. to be honest the packers forgot to pack them, and we didn’t notice until it was too late and there was not a stool in sight to get them down. Consider them a housewarming gift for our buyers. 😉 Anyhow, we loved those lights so much, that I ordered the exact same ones for this house and we plan to string them from the house to the trees for now, until we can one day build a pergola or structure to hang them.
Lastly, while at Target with Emmy last week, we came across these plastic dishes for 79 cents a piece, no matter if you are buying a cup or large plate! Because our patio is down a level from our kitchen, we’ll always be carrying dishes on stairs. These plastic plates and bowls will be perfect for entertaining outside. They actually look so similar to our everyday gray dishes!
I am so excited to get this space put together and most excited to be able to enjoy it with the family this summer. I will be sure to share it with you when it’s all done! 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful and sunny weekend!
