Bye-Bye Sad Veneer

Remember this dresser I got for free last week from a lovely reader, “Random Heather”? Well let’s refresh your memory…

It was in good shape structurally, meaning the drawers all worked, but cosmetically the veneer was peeling off the sides and the top. I got to work with my handy dandy paint scraper and was able to get all of the remaining veneer off the sides and top. When it was removed, the top was super smooth, but the sides were still pretty rough and one side had some ripples. I decided that paper wouldn’t look great over it because it would look like I had wrinkled the paper and done a poor mod podge job, so I decided to paint. I smoothed it out as best i could by using spackle and then sanding with my orbital sander. Once that was done and the drawers and rest of the dresser was sanded as well, I primed it with 2 coats of my new zero VOC KILZ. Then I used 3 coats of Sherwin Williams Alabaster, and distressed it by hand to bring out the details. I used the original hardware because I liked the modern edge they gave to the dresser with their streamlined shape. Here it is now- sorry these aren’t the best pictures, but it is a rainy day here!

What a transformation. It turned out beautifully! I refinished an art deco piece that belonged to my husband’s mother and although I like the overall look, the sides, like you stated are kind of wavy and I want to redo the exterior all over again. I think I will use the spackle approach you took-especially if it turns out as nicely as yours!

great job cassie! I have lots of veneer stories. Some of it has come off in whole sheets, other has been a real headache! 🙂 This dresser looks a lot better than it did when you got it! Can’t beat free!

ps waiting for glue to dry is almost as bad as watching paint dry! That’s what I’m doing now.

Very nice. I never thought about using spackle…good idea. I wish I knew about using spackle before I refinished that vanity…it would have helped, but for now, it’s very rustic!!

I love to visit and see what new painting project you have finished or are working on. I think my favorite is that you get to use all different colors. I sometimes wish that I could do more than the white, but I have tried, it does not last long and then I have to paint it white anyway. Why fight it. I will just enjoy your colors.
