I have been dying to try painting something with a chevron pattern. I was waiting for the right piece. Well, a few weeks ago a friend of mine called to see if I wanted a desk they had. It was free for the taking, so what do you think I said? Of course, I couldn’t make it over to get it right away, and we had some rainy days, so it suffered a little water damage. I started peeling away veneer right away, and this is what it looked like….
I used my paint scraper to remove all of the veneer from the top and all from the right side. I patched some areas with wood filler, sanded it all down, and got to work. I liked the original hardware it had, and wanted to give it a more modern look, but with so much veneer damage and not a perfectly smooth top or side, I knew a distressed look would suit it more. I primed it with my new fave KILZ Clean Start, and then painted it with an old favorite, “Waterscape” by Behr. This paint goes on so nicely that usually only one coat is needed… bonus! Once that was done, I tried to decide what to do to give it some zing. I thought about painting out the striped detail on the drawers in another color, thought about numbering the drawers on the outside of the pulls… and eventually settled on doing a chevron pattern on the top surface. I used Scotch blue painter’s tape for delicate surfaces and taped out the pattern. Did I measure, you ask? Um, no. I used my plain old eyeballs and just winged it. I think it turned out fine! Instead of painting and really covering where the tape didn’t, I used a dry-brush technique to give it a more worn and distressed look. I am pretty happy with how it turned out and can just see it in some tween boy’s room! I hope it inspires said tween boy to do some homework!
