Coastal Blue & Java Gel Sideboard

Hope you all had a nice long weekend!  We had the most insane record-breaking weekend at Sweet Clover.  We are left with an empty barn and a heart full of gratitude to our vendors for busting their butts, to our families for supporting us (My husband was kind enough to buy Chipotle for myself and the crew who worked with me Sunday!), and most of all to our customers…. for coming to see us and spreading the word about us!  At the close of business, Sarah texted me with a simple “I can’t even!!!!!”  We can’t even believe it and we are in complete and utter awe.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Anyhow, I wanted to share a little makeover today- this piece happened to be the first piece of my own that sold this weekend.  We had it in our facebook album, and it turned out to be in high demand, and sold immediately Friday morning.  So moving forward, I will paint all the things coastal blue.  Be prepared for only coastal blue makeovers here.

You might recall this sideboard I shared last week for #ThriftScoreThursday in its rough state…

I loved the shape and lines and it offered great storage.  One of my absolute favorite General Finishes colors is Coastal Blue, and I knew this piece would look great in a dark color.  The top had some blemishes, so I decided to use Java Gel for a quick makeover.

Because we’ve had such frigid temperatures as well as snow, Chris and I hauled this piece (through our snowy front yard) around the house to the basement so I could have it ready for the sale.  I sanded the top very lightly, and wiped it clean.  I used a rag to apply General Finishes Java Gel to the top, and I allowed that to dry for 24 hours.  I then applied a second coat as I wanted a rich finish.  Finally, another 24 hours later, I gave the edges a light sanding to distress them, and I added a coat of General Finishes Satin Top Coat (I did this at the same time I applied the top coat to the body).

For the body of this piece, it was already so dry that I didn’t need to sand it.  All the prep it needed was a good wipe down with a damp rag. I applied two coats of General Finishes Coastal Blue paint, waiting about 4 hours between coats.  I then distressed all of the edges, and wiped off the dust.  I applied the same topcoat to the base at the same time as I did the top.  Finally, I put the hardware back in place, and I hauled it over to Sweet Clover, where we staged it with our dining area in the very front of the barn.

Here you can see the details of the distressing a bit more. (And pardon my finger prints from carrying it in- dark colors can be tricky to photograph!  And I was photographing it when it was about 25 degrees in the barn, so I didn’t bother cleaning them off too much- my fingers were going numb!).

And one more detail shot…

If you read Friday’s post which featured photos of the barn staged and ready to go, you may have spied this piece in the background of the dining area Sarah and I staged.  The white table, red velvet sofa, blue buffet, and chandelier all had new owners on Friday!

Because we knew that this sideboard was going to sell right away (judging from the facebook feedback), another vendor brought a similar one she painted with Coastal Blue, which then sold right away as well, and Sarah painted a washstand in it as well- and it sold.  Like I said…. paint all the things Coastal Blue.

Sweet Clover is proud to be a General Finishes retailer, so if you are local, you can find your coastal blue paint, and several other colors, at our barn!

And now, I am off to the thrift shops…. because I’ve got one month to fill this barn back up!

Blue is my favorite color, so of course I love it! I do have a question–why do the distressed area have a golden tint to them? Is it the wood showing through? Did I miss something? simply beautiful, no wonder it sold quickly.

    congrats on a great sale!

hi gail! it is just the wood showing through- it’s just lighter where it shows through, and with the topcoat on it, it has a slight sheen so it looks more golden. thank you! 🙂

Stunning in blue! Never used General Finishes paint and will have to find a supplier (in Canada). Does G.F paint work differently than other paints…no need to sand or prime? Thanks so much!

i always sand lightly if the finish is shiny- otherwise is sticks well with no priming!
