Hey guys! I am back with the Creative DIY Team today (myself, Brenda, Cristina, & Susan) and this time with Thanksgiving on the horizon we thought we’d share with you some tablescape ideas. I have to admit, this was my idea and I am the one who totally struggled to come up with something! I had just created my Halloween tablescape and I was in that mode, unready to dismantle it. Because my kids and I wanted to enjoy its creepiness through October 31, I decided to take my ideas outside to our porch table and bring you a colorful kids thanksgiving table.I am always a big fan of working with what you have, and since I recently sold my main source of income (not that it was much!), I especially wanted to created this table with thriftiness in mind. As I left Sweet Clover, the new owners were gracious enough to let us keep inventory there for the next few months on consignment. However, there were a few things that I decided to pull out
because I have hoarding tendencies that I “might want one day.” One of those items that I took home was a collection of vintage plastic “cowboys and indians” in vivid colors. Upon their arrival at home, Sawyer spied them and asked if he could have them, so naturally they now belong to him. But a lightbulb went on when I thought that they might be a great jumping off point for a Thanksgiving styled table.
Sidenote: Because I wanted to be sensitive to all ethnicities, I did do a little research before putting this post together to learn of the Wampanoag tribe’s take on Thanksgiving and learned that they do in fact celebrate Thanksgiving and that the events are recalled peaceably. (Here’s a great article about it if you are interested in reading.)
To create a colorful and Native American inspired kids table, I started with those vintage plastic toys. From there I gathered items I already owned including a bright and beautiful vintage Mexican blanket, fiesta dishes (these were my straight-outta-college-had-to-have-dishes), vintage green glass goblets (also taken home from Sweet Clover), and brightly colored rainbow feathers that were in my craft stash.
I wasn’t sure what I would do with the feathers, and it can get pretty windy out there, but inspiration struck when I walked out and saw the grapevine wreath I had dismantled and placed over the table for Halloween. Hanging the feathers over the table would keep it light and airy, add a bit of color and softness, and they could be tied to the grapevine.
To hang them I simply used wire to wrap around the quill, create a little loop, and then wrap a little more. I then just used some white thread to tie them to the vine.
I have 9 different colors of fiesta dishes, so I pulled out the 6 that I thought worked best with everything else, and then mixed and matched them on the table, layering various colors. And of course, since this was a kids table, I grabbed some blue paper napkins I had on hand…. can’t trust those kids and their little hands! 😉 Each place setting also has one Native American in front of it.
On the fiesta platter, I added a vintage white pitcher and filled it with blooms from my herb garden. These vibrant red flowers belong to our pineapple sage which is growing like crazy at the moment.
In the end the effect was extremely colorful, fun, and kid approved by my two who came home from school and saw and loved it! It’s a little bright for my neutral loving soul, but the intention is that this style is for the kids.
Of course this style also works well with my porch, so I had to include these shots of my peacock wicker chair, draped with another Mexican blanket. #cantgetenough
Of course the weather this week is windy and chilly, so I don’t think we’ll be doing a Thanksgiving table outside, but you just never know! Hopefully this has given you some fun and colorful ideas for your own table. I’ve gathered up several items from Etsy and Wayfair for you to recreate the look should you wish. Now be sure to check out what the other girls have created for you this month. Here’s a little sneak peek of each.
And if you are looking for more Thanksgiving table inspiration, here are some of my own tables from the past.
