Happy Friday to you, TGIF, and holy cow it’s already December!!! Tomorrow morning we are headed off to the farm for cider donuts…. and a tree, which I guess is more important, but let’s be honest… cider donuts. Originally I was supposed to work Saturday, but the schedule at J. Crew was switched and I am off tomorrow so we’ll come home and get our tree up, decorate it, and then head to the town center for the tree lighting and parade there. Since Emmy is a girl scout she’s in the parade, and I always love watching the adorable gaggle of girls make their way down main street. Speaking of trimming the tree , today I have a super easy (like so easy a toddler can even do it with you!) Christmas craft: DIY clay boho style ornaments.

Over the past few weeks I have shared a couple of other easy DIY ornaments like the wood burned log slices as well as the hand painted woodland animal wood slices. However, this one takes the cake on the easy factor!
You will need….
- Sculpey clay in white (this is a great deal on Amazon, BTW!)
- Rolling pin
- Tribal cookie cutters (this is the set I bought)
- Baking sheet
- Clay tools– optional
- Rub N’ Buff and sharpie- optional
- String or twine
To make these, just follow these easy steps.
- Preheat your oven to 275 degrees.
- Roll out your clay on a clean surface. I used a marble slab which worked well. I rolled my clay our to about 1/4″ thickness.
- Using your cookie cutters, press down on the clay to cut your shapes.
- Place them on your baking sheet as you go. I filled mine up with as many as I could fit. Unlike cookies, clay won’t really expand, so you can place them a little closer together.
- Add any details you would like to before baking, and make the hole for the string. I used a tool to add some little lines on my cacti ornaments to make the prickly things they have (I am sure there is a name for that and if you know it, share!). Oh, and don’t judge my old and well loved baking sheets; I am just keeping it real for you here.To add the holes, I simple used a straw, which is probably the easiest way to make a nice clean hole.
- Bake in the oven for 15 minutes per 1/4″ thickness. My oven sometimes tends to run a little slow, so I kept mine in there for 25 minutes. I have found you can’t really overbake it much unless you REALLY just forget about them in the oven!
- Let them cool for a while on the sheet. When they are cool to touch, you can use your Rub N’Buff to gild them if you wish. I gilded the edges of my feathers and arrows, and a couple of arrows went all gold after my finger slipped. 😉 For the teepees I used a sharpie and just drew some simple designs.
- Add a string, ribbon, twine to hang each ornament. You can use whatever you prefer! A friend suggested leather or suede and I loved that idea, but I didn’t have any on hand and I didn’t want to add any more cost to making these.
That’s all there is to it! I told you these were ridiculously easy. The arrows have, by far, been the most popular at Sweet Clover, but my personal favorite is the teepee.
The feathers are also fun, and I think would make a great fireplace garland for any time of the year. Really, you could make a garland with any of these.
Hope you have a fantastic and festive weekend, whether you are baking, crafting, or just relaxin and enjoying the season. And if you’re local, pop on over to Sweet Clover for some holiday shopping! Cheers!
