DIY Moon Phase Christmas Tree

Last week I made plans to see a friend that I hadn’t seen in a while.  She enjoys many of the same things I do, so we decided to get crafty and pick something to make.  I came across these DIY eye ornaments from A Beautiful Mess, sent her the link, and she was sold.  I headed to my local Joann’s and found some great shatterproof ornaments in blues, aquas, and silvers, and decided to use them to decorate the silver tree on my porch. Once I came home with those colors and envisioned it with the silver tree, an idea struck me to create a DIY moon phase Christmas tree with other night-time inspired ornaments.I simply used artist brushes and acrylic paints to create several different ornaments to fit the vibe.  Yes, they are called “artist brusshes” for the fine tip, but you should know that this girl is no artist.  These truly are ornaments that anyone can paint.  Of course, the most important were the actual lunar phase ornaments.  For these, I selected the satin finish cobalt ornaments, and used Americana white paint to add the phases of the moon.  As for knowing which phases to paint, I just pulled up an image on google to guide me.  Once I hung them on the tree and the breeze was blowing, they shifted a bit, but hopefully you can see here.  I hung them diagonally across the tree so they would make a line of the phases together.Moon Phases painted on ornaments- diyNaturally, the crescents are the most obvious moon shape and most recognizable.Crescent moon phase painted ornamentsOnce I had those completed, I had fun painting all sorts of things to suit this tree. My personal favorite is the “man in the moon” ornament. To paint him, I painted a white circle, used Americana black paint to paint a face, and then used a touch of pink on the cheeks.Man in the moon painted ornament DIYI also painted sheep… I remember learning to paint these as a child and as you can see, I still use that easy method.  Paint a puff of white, add legs and a head, and add a little puff of white to the top of the head. 😉 More moons and some stars were added.
I painted some standard stars as well as some that to me look more like the star of Bethlehem. And of course, the ornament that started it all was this sleepy eye ornament inspired by A Beautiful Mess.A few of the ornaments were painted with “Zzz” and I added peace signs here and there as well.

Peace Sign OrnamentThe white ball garland was already on this tree and fit in perfectly.White Garland on TreeI love that this tree is a little unique, a little boho, ties all the colors of our porch together, and the ornaments are shatterproof which is essential for our windy hill top.
If you want to create your own moon phase tree, I’ve gathered a list of the supplies below this graphic.  (These are affiliate links.) Have fun with it!

What a fun tree idea!! I adore that little cabin below it too. I’m going to pin this for next year in Sam’s room. It would tie in perfectly with his moon ?
