Does This Rug Make My Bed Look Big?

This room is not yet even a work in progress… please don’t judge by these photos!

I was not planning on writing a post about rugs today at all.  But I am.  Emmy and I had some errands to run this morning that brought is near a pricey Goodwill we never go to because it is, well, pricey.  But on a whim we decided to go in, and I found a huge (vintage, I think) rug with no price.  I wasn’t sure that it would work in my bedroom, where I need a rug.  The colors were not quite right, but I liked its overall look.  So I asked about the price and a gentleman found someone who could get me a price.  She walked over and said “Five Dollars”.  I said, “Really???  Five dollars????  I will take it!”  I shouted before she could change her mind.  She said she would go print me a ticket.  When she returned with the price tag printed she said “Well, it’s $4.14.”  Um, OK.  So Emmy and I headed to the checkout to pay for our new rug.

So I took it home, cleaned it off, vacuumed it off, and put it in my room.  Here is where you come in…. I am just not sure it works.  But it is such a cool rug and was such a steal!!!  So anyhow, I took some pictures.  I plan to paint the wall behind the bed a dark accent color, and the other walls white…  Just soak in the pictures and leave me your thoughts.  The first few pictures have the quilt spread out, the last show it folded at the foot with the white coverlet showing.

Help a girl out.

    What a great steal! This could be “wrong” but do you think the white in the bed skirt is throwing it off because of the cream in the rug? Just a thought. I do like it and I really like it with the bench at the end of the bed. I guess I’m not much help;

What a beautiful rug!! I can’t believe you scored that for less than $5!! I can see why you’re not quite sure if it works though, so I’ve been staring at it trying to figure out the problem…I like it best with the blanket folded at the end of the bed, but the rug still doesn’t look quite right, and I think the problem is just all the empty space on either side of the bed, which makes everything look kind of off balance. Maybe you could scoot the rug a little further under the bed, and then find two more rugs that match each other, but don’t match this rug, just compliment it with similar coloring or shapes…(like maybe some dots? because this rug has dots and so does your blanket…) so anyways the two new rugs could go on either side of the bed but they’d have to be big enough to also layer over the sides of this rug….can you picture it?? Sorry it’s hard to describe, and I ramble when I’m explaining things! Also it sucks that my idea means spending more money! But I’ve seen Genevieve Gorder do that with rugs around beds on her show “Dear Genevieve” and it always looks so good! Anyways the rug is beautiful and no matter what you end up doing with it, it was an awesome find!

I think you could make the rug work by moving it farther (maybe a third of the way) under the bed.

UM AMAZING! $5??? I need to go shopping with you and let some of your mojo rub off on me. I like it in there, but I’m not a match-matchy person. Live with it for a few days and see if it grows on you. You’ll probably get used to it.

I have to agree with Anne Marie – move it a little further under the bed. It works better with the quilt folded IMO, but then again you did warn us this is an unfinished project. By the time you get it all pulled together, it’ll look fab. You have a good start…and $4.14? That’s just crazy awesome!

First of all – your post title had me laughing before I even clicked. !

Second, I think it is great. However, I would pull it back under the bed farther. I did the same thing with my sister’s room and it worked great. Try almost halfway under. It will ground your bed and not overwhelm it. Then, I’d definitely leave the quilt folded at the end. The pattern in full might be a distraction with the rug but when folded, it is a great contrast with the white and the white works well with the heavy patterns! And since you asked (lol..are you sorry you did?) I’d plump up your lamps to balance out the heavy pattern in your rug – pull some of the “heavy” (heavy in a good way) up. 🙂 You are going to have a great room!

I like the look of the rug with the quilt folded. The blues work well together but like others have said, the white of the bed may be throwing off the cream color in the rug. What if you added some red, brown or cream accents on the bed? The brown wood of the bench works really well with it, so maybe more wood tones?

HOLY COW!!! How could you NOT buy it for that price. I would MAKE it work. haha Now, my thoughts on it are, combined with the quilt it has a rustic cabin feel to it. Not sure what you’ll be going for in your room, but I would love those two (rug and quilt) in our one day home in Northern Cali. And, not sure what you’re options are in the room, but is there an opportunity to put the bed in a different orientation? So, if the end of the bed right is at 6 o clock, what if you moved the head to the wall at 9 o clock? Would that change the open floor space at all to maybe make the size of the rug work differently?
Just random thoughts. I’m looking forward to seeing it all come together.

What a steal of a deal! I like how the patterns in the rug rather mimic some of the patterns on the quilt. Sounds like others have hit it on the head as far as moving it. I think that will make a big difference!

What a deal! The bench is also an awesome piece and I agree with others that they work well together. The last photo is my favourite combo, the white linens, rustic bench, pattern of the rug and quilt folded. I agree that you might like it better if you pull the rug up further under the bed. You would lose some of the center medallion but it might ground the bed more. It is probably worth a try. Oh, and all my rooms are works in progress.

SCORE! I would have bought it too. I think by bringing some of the brown and or red in the form of a pillow or throw will help the rug read right. It’s cool! Congrats. Thanks, too, for being brave to show a work in progress.

I feel bad saying it but I just don’t think it works. I think your style in much more bright and happy and airy than that rug says. Could you sell it on Craigs List, make a profit and save up for a rug that you are completely smitten with?

*FOUR* dollars? What an outrageous steal! I like the rug, but I think I would like it better if you slid it up under the bed a little ways. I really like how it looks with the quilt folded up on the end of the bed, and I love that quilt.

My initial thought before reading everyone else’s comments – and after a big gasp from the amazing price – is to move the rug further under the bed. I like this look a lot! Another thought is to add trim to the bottom of the bedskirt – maybe pull the red or brown out in the rug and break up the different whites? Just a thought. I hope this helps.

I love those kinds of finds…makes you even more excited to have it! Very cool. My suggestion for the room is to move it further under the bed. and I love your quilt, bc it picks up the blue in the rug itself, but I would keep it folded at the edge of the bed, the rug really pops against the white on your bed. can’t wait to see your finished room!

great deal Cassie -I think you should put white sheets/cover on the bed and see what it looks like . there may be too many clashing patterns currently. what do you think? the rug is so bold that I think it’s too much with the doona cover.
    good luck with it all!

I like the rug and for that price I’d say keep it. I like the look when the quilt is folded however I would change the pink pillow on the bed to a redish pillow {same color that is in the rug} and change your bedskirt to a boxpleat khaki/flax colored skirt with same colored shams. That may make it all come together better. Right now I think there are too many colors competing against each other. hope that helps, not sure if you wanted an in depth opinion like that. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I will have to agree with some of the other Gals, the rug needs to go about 1/2 to 2/3 under the bed. When you paint the wall that rich color you were taking about i think it will pull the room together. I also like the blue and white comforter as an accent folded at the end of the bed!

I’m an artist, not a decorator but here’s my 2 cents. When I first saw the rug I thought it wasn’t a fit in the room but then you talked about painting the walls. I’m not a fan of white walls when there are so many amazing colors out there but I’d work around the rug. When you folded the quilt and the small pattern was left-it works really well with the rug- on a design level. Pleasing to my eye anyway. I buy rugs because I love them. I find really nice ones at craft fairs. Pricey sometimes but they are pieces of art. I move them from room to room til they have a home. I always notice rugs. I think you found a gift. Can’t wait to see what evolves.

I love the rug! I like the top pic best..maybe fold the quilt on that side? I agree with the off white opinions. Paint the walls a nice warm color and it will all work. You know Nate Burkus says…no to accent walls, if you love it commit to the whole thing. (I have accent walls..just saying).

I love the post title. It made me giggle. I think the rug works if you are going for a Scandinavian look. And I think you might be? But, I think you need to change one more thing with the bedding and add in another print to make the rug and duvet blend better. Then scoot that rug under the bed, or change the orientation. And add some natural baskets under the bench. Heck, for 5.00 you could even paint that sucker and it would be totally worth it. Geesh.

What an incredible deal! I think once you have the wall painted a dark blue, it’ll all tie in together and look fabulous. Move the rug so more is under the bed. The white bed skirt might be too much white against the off white in the rug. How about changing the bed skirt to navy or blue and white ticking? Love the bench! Can’t wait to see the evolution of your room.

Just a thought – can you ditch the bedskirt? I think maybe it’s the bright white against the cream in the rug that is throwing it off a little. Either way I would pull it up under the bed a bit more. It looks so great with the bench and I like it with the comforter folded down!

I love that rug and quilt together {great find on the rug, BTW}. Since you are uncertain about how the rug fits in the room, I have to ask the same question someone else did … is the style of the rug the look you are after in the room? If it isn’t, I don’t think any amount of clever design is going to make you happy with it in the end. I know from experience that sheer will cannot trump the wrong rug 😉 So if it isn’t the right rug, is there another rug in the house you could swap it with … 2 redo’s for the whopping price of $4.xx!

If you want to continue working with the rug, is it large enough to turn it so the length of the rug is under the bed rather than the width … and move the rug under the bed enough so there’s some rug and some installed carpet at the bottom of the bed. That would create some balance and breathing space. Add paint and accents = cozy americana space.

Eager to see what you do!

love the rug…what a sick steal!! for me, it’s about balance and the horizontals (bed, floor) are looking busy while the verticals (walls) are disappearing. i know you said you might paint an accent color on the wall behind the bed… how about a navy or a darker shade of blue to balance the pattern on the bed/rug? with the big window, your room won’t be too dark and the side tables/lamps will POP!

of course, i’m not one to give advice after the mess i’ve made of laverne!!

$4.14 for a huge rug?? Since when?? You totally scored! At that price, you can definitely make it work! And since the room is a work in progress, then I’d find ways to make it evolve to fit with the rug! (I think I agree with some other commentors about the ruffly bedskirt sort of seeming like a weird mismatch with the graphic rug, but that’s just what my eye is seeing.) 🙂
