Dollhouse Therapy: Month 1 Design Plan

It’s the day we’ve all been waiting for!!!!!  OK, well maybe I should say it’s the day I have been waiting for because I am so excited to officially launch Dollhouse Therapy today!  You can click here to find out just what it is all about.  Each month for the next 3 months, my cohosts (Alice, Anu, and Emy) and I will share design plans on the first Tuesday, and invite you all to play along with your own dollhouse and link up your finished rooms on the last Tuesday of the month, when we will also reveal our own spaces.  For Month 1, April, I’ve created a design plan for just one room, but I will most likely be finishing 2 spaces since my house has 6 rooms and a hall.  I just haven’t fully decided on the second space for this month.  So for now, I want to share with you the first set of plans for the living room!  If you read yesterday’s post, you already saw some sneak peeks of this space.

Dollhouse Living Room PlansPin

So there’s the major design plan!  I am going to break it down for you with what it includes and how it came to be.
Emmy came home a couple months ago with a notebook she had labeled “My Designs,” and she excitedly showed me her own plans for her interior design business.  She had created her building as well as her office space.  I asked her what she would describe her design style as and she said “modern country.”  I said, “If you could create a living room, what would it look like?”  She described a white sofa, leather chair, and some black and white touches including a black fireplace.
Well after she headed off to school the next day, I checked out Miniatures.com and found the perfect furniture pieces for her design!  When she arrived home I let her know I had used her design to get started, and she was thrilled!
They had a beautiful off white leather look sofa within my budget.

And the complementary leather look club chair was also just what Emmy wanted.
Dollhouse Fireplace with federal mirrorPin
The snake plant and the federal mirror were also found at Miniatures.com. I am a sucker for federal mirrors so when I saw that, I knew we had to have it! And they also have a killer selection of house plants and even the cutest hanging plants!
I wasn’t sure what I would do for a side table in there, but this set of 3 suitcases caught my eye and we ended up stacking them as a table.
Once all of the major players were in place, we were able to plan out and design this space. Aside from Miniatures.com we looked to etsy for some vintage and handmade finds. And we came up with several DIY ideas as well which I’ll be sharing this month.  The fireplace is one of the easiest DIY ever and so silly simple.
The larger items were the easiest to select and plan, but when it came to the decorative touches, we wanted items that were “just right” for our house and suited our personalities.  Additionally, we are keeping the plans of this house in its entirety cohesive with our own dining room so that we can keep it on display to enjoy and Emmy will also be able to easily play with it as she wishes.
Emmy and I both adore eclectic art work and we knew our house had to have some! When I was perusing instagram and stumbled upon my friend Jacqueline sharing her new miniature clay hangings, I knew it was just the thing this house needed.  At first I didn’t know where we would put it, but when it arrived, Emmy and I both thought it was exactly right for the living room.
Clay Wild & Free banner from Simple Home LifePin
I mean, that banner is pretty much going to just make this space in my opinion!  So fun!
We also wanted to bring some color in the form of mint into this space, and pillows seemed like the perfect place for this.  We found a few fun fabrics at Joann’s, but I’ve found similar pillows you can also get in real life size.  (And let me just say how freaking hard it is to sew teeny tiny things!!!!  Our pillows are far from perfect!) The black and white pillow you see mimics the famous Ikea Lappljung Ruta pillow, of course!
And how pretty is this real life version of our mint swiss cross pillow?
PinI mean, I kind of want that for my own house now!
The “love” pillow on our white sofa was created by Emmy, but I’ve found a similar one on Etsy  from Once Upon a Design in case you want the big people’s version.
love pillowPinWe’ve still got some other minor touches to add, and there’s a little entry nook in this space that needs attention.  I plan to add window trim, too.  But I wanted to share the overall plan today and keep a few things to myself so there would be some surprise element to the room reveal at the end of the month!  For those of you that are participating, please join us in the facebook group you can find here.  Just request permission to join; finicky facebook was not allowing me to invite people by email very well.  Also remember you can join in via instagram as well by using #dollhousetherapy on your posts to share!  I am looking forward to seeing what everyone creates at the end of the month!  Happy mini-making!
Miniatures.com provided me with merchandise in exchange for this post.  I was not otherwise compensated and all opinions are my own.  This post also contains affiliate links which help keep this blog alive and running. Thank you!

I love Emmy’s style! I hope that I rub off on my daughter one day. Until then, it’s a pink explosion. Your tiny pillows are adorable.

Emmy’s dollhouse is nicer than my real house!! Seriously the little details are just amazing….the wall hanging, pillows, and furniture are so much cooler than the dollhouses I remember!

That mini sized snake plant is the cutest thing I ever saw! Driving ten hours to New Orleans in order to steal the family dollhouse from my sister seems like a good idea right now! I told her to follow along with this so maybe this summer when I visit we can redecorate!

Emmy is a girl after my own heart! You may indeed have a budding interior designer on your hands. I remember having a notebook of (terrible) furniture ideas and “inspiration” when I was a kid. Does she also hoard copies of the Pottery Barn catalog and request to read Country Living?

I also love that you can now add Minatures.com to your list of sponsors. If this isn’t a well-rounded blog, I don’t know what is!

Such a fun project, and especially awesome that you are helping Emmy’s design buds grow! Let me know if you would like any scraps from my shop to make pillows, bedding, or other textiles for your tiny spaces!

Love everything you have planned so far! I’ve joined in on IG (@thetinyfixer), #dollhousetherapy is such perfect timing for me because I started work on renovating a vintage Lundby I bought for my daughter last year. I cannot wait to see what else you do with the house.
