Driftwood Style Dresser

Forgive me, because I do not have a before picture of this dresser.  As I mentioned earlier this week, our house is a bit of a chaotic mess right now since it flooded, and stuff is all over the place.  It. Is. Driving. Me. Crazy.  Anyhow, I started this dresser the day after I got home from my trip to Louisiana and forgot to take a picture of it and another piece I just finished.  It was a free craigslist find, so not the prettiest to begin with!So just imagine an ugly dark pine, chunky looking dresser with brass pulls, one of which was broken.  The color and finish were similar to this dresser.  It was pretty banged up as pine is a softer wood, and I decided to roll with that look.

I filled holes sanded it pretty hard with my orbital sander, then used Benjamin Moore’s Aura paint and primer in one.  It went on beautifully in just two coats of Wedgewood Gray.  Once that was dry, I distressed all the edges by hand, and went over it with Cabot Dune Gray stain which is really a sandy color.  Then once that was dry, I went over that with Cabot Dark Gray stain.  When that was all dry, I went over it all with paste wax.  It ended up with a very weathered, driftwood look to it.  I also added new hardware.  The lower cup pulls are from Hobby Lobby, and the top knobs are courtesy of Anthropologie’s clearance section.
Before I show you the after pics, please note that the color and finish are more like the picture of the details and NOT of the picture of the entire dresser.  It was gray and starting to rain outside, so hard to get a great picture!!  Anyhow, I am happy with how it turned out, and love the look all the layers of paint and finish gave it!

    Beautiful!
If I lived closer, I’d come to help you, I swear! Flood cleanup is the WORST! Oh and fire cleanup, that one sucks too!

I love this! Love the hardware. I just put those very same pulls on a couple of black dressers. I have not snapped photos yet because they are already in their new home – a good friend’s home so I will be taking pictures when time allows me to make it over there!

And those anthro knobs and gorg-e-ous!

Very cool finish, I’ve been wondering how you do a driftwood style. So sorry to hear you flooded, that is just awful! Sending you good (dry) thoughts.

I am loving that gray color. Sorry about the flood. We had one a few years ago and lost TONS of stuff. It sucked and took way too long to get it back to looking good. My sympathies are with you!

I am so sorry to hear about your flood! That sucks! When my son was 2 months old, our family room flooded and it was a total nightmare to rearrange our life until it all dried up. Hopefully you’re on the road to “recovery”!

I love this dresser! It’s amazing how a little paint and some new hardware has completely updated this piece! Seriously, I think I’ve passed by dressers just like the “before” at Goodwill 100 times and never considered the potential it had. The transformations you show us week after week are just amazing! You have such a great eye for the hidden beauty in all pieces 🙂
