Emmy’s High School Bedroom Makeover Plan

If you’ve been around this blog for a long time, you’ve watched Emmy grow up over the years. And if you’re relatively new, you can take a peek at this photo from one of my OG blog posts, when Emmy was just about to turn 2. Now, she’s 14 1/2 years old and preparing to enter high school. She’s creative, sarcastically funny, smart and she’s the one in my family who really gets me. I’m lucky to be her mama. When we moved into this house in January of 2019, Emmy took a completely new route with her bedroom and went much more neutral. It was completely her doing as I allowed her to design her space. A couple of weeks ago we went into target because she needed a new large pillow for her bed. She selected a body pillow with a peach pattern which snowballed into her telling me she sorta missed her old bedroom which was colorful boho and fun.  We decided then and there that it was time to update her bedroom for her high school years and bring in some of that color, fun and personality. Today I am going to share the plan with you, and in a few weeks, we’ll be ready with the reveal!

The Room As Of Now, or Rather That One Time It Was Clean

Once upon a time, I took this photo of her room when it was sort of clean. This was a long time ago, but it gives you the general idea of what her room looks like is supposed to look like.

And then her wallpaper wall that is adjacent to what was her desk wall above.

We brought in some color last year with that wallpaper wall, which brings in the peach plus a million other pastel shades. Now it’s time to add color to the rest of the room.

Now, I get this question a lot so I wanted to make it clear that we did not paint this room and literally just moved her right in to this lavender-gray space and it’s worked. We are going to try to just keep that wall color and see how it comes together, but we may eventually paint it. She likes it and it’s rather calming, so fingers crossed it will be able to stay.

Alright, All You Freshman Peaches Bedroom Plan

First of all, can you name the movie where the name for this mood board comes from? If you can, you are my people.

As I mentioned, it all started with that peach body pillow you can see in the design plan. Then Mohawk reached out to me to collaborate on a rug if I happened to be redoing any kids rooms for school. The timing was kismet! I should tell you, as lovely as Emmy’s rug is, shortly after we moved in she vomited red icee on it and I worked SO HARD to get it out but you can still faintly see it on the fringe. In case you were wondering why we would remove a rug. Haha. However, I may just relocate it to another spot. Time will tell. Let me take you through each of the new elements plus some that are staying. Each item was selected by Emmy and then we worked together to put it all together in a mood board so she could narrow down some choices.

Rug: This Mohawk rug is soft and light but brings in some of the warmer peaches and oranges she’s wanting to add.

Pillows: Here’s the peach pillow that started it all! She adores it and I am all for anything that makes her happy in her home. She also shopped Society6, which offers so many fantastic artist created products, and found these two pillows which complement the peach pillow. I love the message on this Save Our Mother pillow. The peach-colored yin-yang is sweet, modern and simple.

Bedding: New warm peachy bedding will really help transform this space. We loved this one because it’s organic as well.

Bed: Her gold canopy bed will remain, but we’re going to remove the curtains which have a giant ink stain. Plus, Wilder loves to yank them which doesn’t bode well for the bed frame. The lights she has strung on it will remain and we’ll also add some greenery for a little boho touch.

Tapestry: My girl is a fab of Harry Styles, and when we spotted this tapestry, it immediately jumped into our cart. It’s the perfect marriage of her style and the object of her adoration. It arrived last week and she’s already hung it above her bed to do her sun worshiping.

Posters: Emmy loved this Howdy poster and the colors are spot on. Hawaii has always been her dream destination and she’s even talked about going to the University of Hawaii, so this Aloha poster was a perfect fit, too.

Poster Frames: We are using Custom Picture Frames again because we love their products! I’ve used their frames in our entry, living room, Wilder’s room and bathroom. They have non-reflective plexiglass which really helps soften the look. Plus, they’re affordable and you can get any size you need. Readers can get 20% off with code CASSIE20.

Oyster Table Lamp: I mean, why not? It’s an oyster. It’s a lamp. What’s not to love? It may not be here in time for the reveal, but Emmy told me it was worth the wait and she wanted it.

Wallpaper: I did tell Emmy that whatever she did had to work with her existing wallpaper. Thank goodness it has every color imaginable!

And there you have it! This week is her week to clean out what’s there and really edit down so we can start putting this plan in place. Say a little prayer that she can summon her inner Marie Kondo. I am not actually sure she has an inner Marie Kondo, but here’s hoping.

I love the plan! Wish Lilly would let me do anything new with her room. Right now she wants minimal things in her room. She doesn’t even want a rug!!!
