Emmy’s Vanity Redo

I had promised a local magazine that I would not share pictures of a couple pieces I sent to them until after the issue featuring some of my work was out… Well it has been delayed again.  Who knows if it will actually publish ever, and I am OK either way.  But I told them I could no longer hold off on publishing the pieces here… Hello, my readers want to see Emmy’s vanity! 😉  And I, my friends, could not let you down.  And I want to share her entire room soon and can’t do that without showing all the pieces!

Anyhow, you may remember just a year or so ago, I found this vanity on craigslist and painted it a shade of orange for her old room which featured pink and orange and a touch of turquoise.  Here it is in her old room…

Well, I really loved it in her old room, but in her new room, the colors just weren’t working.  So a few months ago I gave it a makeover.  I sanded it and the stool just to rough up the surface as the color that was on them was fine as an undercoat.  I gave it two coats of Dream Whip By Benjamin Moore Aura.  Then I lightly distressed it, and went over all of it with Minwax Golden Oak to warm and age it a bit.  I did not seal it.  I have found in my experience that when I use an oil based stain over paint it helps give protection.  I don’t know if it is supposed to at all, but it has always worked for me.
I added new teardrop hardware from Hobby Lobby.
For the bench, I removed the old fabric and used a dropcloth remnant to cover the cushion.  I used textile medium and red acrylic paint to paint the word”primp” in script.  I don’t want to ruin the whole thing by showing you her entire room all together yet, so I am sharing old pictures I took of it.  He he.

Her little nook doesn’t get great light, but here is a picture of it pre-hardware that shows the color.  It’s a gorgeous soft pink.  I spent hours deciding what paint color… I knew I wanted a pink and if I had looked at the swatches anywhere else this would not be the color I would have chosen.  But in her room and in her lighting, it was perfect.

I will be back tomorrow for POWW! See you then!

You are very creative, Cassie – like the idea of using a dropcloth and adding lettering to the seat. This is a perfect vintage pink. The set has so much character.
