It’s Snowing Outside, But It’s Spring on My Mantle!

I am just going to ignore what is happening outside today, and pretend it is Spring.  After all, today is St. Patty’s Day, which is all about fresh and green.  And we had a glorious weekend of beautiful weather, and I even hit the flea market for the first time this year…. which to me means it is Spring.  Mother Nature might not be in agreement at this moment, but I am going to do my thing and make it Spring inside.  Last week I worked on sprucing up the mantle and wanted to share it today.
Since I just recently painted the fireplace and mantle black, this was my first time giving it a Spring look in its new coat.  I also wanted to work with only things I had on hand.  Luckily, my parents had given Emmy some brightly colored flowers for her performance in the talent show, so I was able to use those to bring in some Spring color, and also pop against the black.  And dare I say it, but it brings in a bit of the color of the year, radiant orchid!
I placed the flowers in two matching milk glass vases.  On the left side, I grouped some vintage books that had Spring like color bindings.  I also left up my pom pom garland from Ooh La La, for a playful touch.  I love how it contrasts the black and keeps it from being so serious.
I also selected these books because of the gold…. as you can see above the lettering on some of them is gold.  And the stack the flowers sit on has gilded pages, which tie into my brass deer, which of course stayed from the last mantle update.
Below these books and flowers, I placed my green glass candlesticks on the hearth, again bringing in some color for Spring.  These were an anthropologie clearance item from several years back.

On the right side of the mantle, I placed a sheep painting I purchased in 2008 at the Lucketts Spring Antique Market.  I loved the colors and the shape of the sheep.  Again I stacked some books, and placed a vase of flowers on top.  I love balance, but not necessarily symmetry, so I was looking for balance with the left side.

And below the painting, my brass deer pair play on the hearth. 🙂

Here you can see how it all works together.

Standing in the entry of the living room, here is the view….
Overall, I am happy with the outcome as it feels fresh and Spring like, but is still very me.  Sarah and I were chatting the other day about how Spring is just the hardest season for us to decorate.  I am not into pastels, so I always find it a little tricky.  What about you?  Do you love to decorate for Spring, or is it hard for you, too?  Of course, it doesn’t help when it snows when you are trying to get into the Spring spirit!

LOVE it (especially those books and glass candlesticks)! Spring is hard. Especially with the ridiculous weather this year. I’ve been adding in more flowering plants around here.

it’s perfect. I don’t decorate specifically for spring. If I do anything seasonal now, it’s got to work for a while.

I find I don’t really change the “decor” of our home with the season. Well I guess Christmas is an exception! A little splash of color is very fresh and cheerful and flowers are a great way to accomplish this.

I absolutely love that sheep painting, Cassie!! It is just the right amount of spring colors popping against your black fireplace, perfect for spring! I use a lot of green year round, and it works really well in spring, especially right now when there is snow on the ground on St Patricks Day (that is so wrong!) Hope all your snow melts and your have green grass out your window in the very near future!

Spring IS tricky to decorate for, but you’ve done such a great job! Those deer are amazing; they’re so big! And surely this is your last snow this year, right? It just HAS to be! (we’ve got cold rain again; I would say I prefer snow, but you probably don’t want to hear anything like that after the winter you’ve had ;))

Spring is hard for me. More than any other season, I WANT to change the decor for spring. But I don’t do it for a number of reasons. My spring doesn’t come till mid April. My desire for spring comes in early March. If I wait for spring, I miss the desire. If I give in to the desire, I feel like an idiot. I have started doing my mantle for spring since blogging and I’m trying to decide what I’m going to do. I always have my best ideas for spring mantles in December. One day I’m going to get it all ready in December and put it away in a box so it is ready when I have a rainy or cold March day.

Perfect pops of color and love your vintage books. 🙂 I usually resort to greens and metallics to decorate for spring with the occasional pop of color — it can be tricky, especially when its gray and nasty outside!

Hey Cassie1 How are you doing? Ooh that fireplace! Those brass deers are to die for! Where did you get them? I scrolled down so fast so that I could leave you a comment so I may have missed it if you mentioned where you purchased them.

Also let’s hope that’s our last snow storm, although I have received paid days off of work because of it.

Spring will surely kick my butt though. Allergies! I’m not ready.
