Kitchen Backsplash Plans and Weekend Deal!

Woot woot, it’s Friday!  This week has been long and cold… Spring, are you out there?  Anyhow, I know I mentioned to you that I gave up wine for lent.  Well, Chris gave up beer so we are an alcohol free zone at the moment, which means instead of sitting around drinking wine this weekend, I am going to tackle my backsplash finally!  I have some plans to brighten up the space a bit.  If you recall, here is a peek (from my Christmas tour) of what my kitchen currently looks like, minus the wreaths and “Fa La” of course!

I plan to tile the area between the windows and above the stove, taking it up to the center of the window, where eventually a white shelf will be installed.  This recycled glass mosaic is the tile that I chose from The Tile Shop.

I am super excited about it because I had been dreaming of aqua glass tile.  I thought it would look lovely with my navy painted cabinets.  If you haven’t noticed, I love my blues.   Of course I searched pinterest for kitchens that had navy cabinets and aqua backsplashes and found NOTHING.  And you know what, I trust myself enough in this decision that I got even more excited about it!  Something different.  I can do this.  And it will be awesome.  And I will always be remembered as the girl with the navy cabinets and aqua backsplash.  “Cassie, she was sweet and sometimes funny- well, she laughed at her own jokes anyhow.  But what I really remember is her kitchen…. 50 shades of blue.”  Am I right?

I have all the supplies here from The Tile Shop.  I have the grout, the buckets, the sponges, the trowel, mortar, and a tile cutter.  Now I just need to hone my skills and do it!
Do you know that I actually tiled the backsplash in our first house in Louisiana?  Well, I did!  I was so proud of it… I was hoping to find an old photo to share, but I guess I don’t have one.  But I found this adorable picture of Sawyer when he was 14 months old dressed as a train conductor for Halloween.  So at least I have that.  Wasn’t he adorable?  Look at those little feet!

But I digress.  What were we even talking about?  Oh right, tile and navy and aqua goodness!

Monday I shared with you a little tablescape I created in our dining room, which is open to the kitchen.

You can see here that the tile I selected will tie in perfectly with my gallery wall, stools, and glassware- colors of the ocean!
Why should I care about tying in the glassware?  Aside from the awesome thrifted goblets, I have an entire collection of vintage aqua glasses just waiting to come out and play in the kitchen! These will all go on the shelf above the backsplash.

Now, how about some gorgeous inspiration just to see the juxtaposition of aqua and navy?
I love everything about this kitchen!  My kids would probably put their knees through those caned stools, but other than that, I could live here.

This kitchen was designed by Ruthie Sommers and I am in love with it!  I can not find the original source but this image was pinned from this link by Ruthie herself in her portfolio.  It’s very similar with the navy lower cabinets, butcher block countertops, and the green is akin to my aqua!  Oh, and notice the bentwoods?

And as you may recall, navy and turquoise are alive and well in my master bedroom!

Seeing these images has be super excited to get to work!  Wish me luck, and good luck to anyone else who is summoning their weekend warrior!

Oh, and I wanted to also let you know that The Tile Shop has 15% off all tile this weekend AND they are also giving away two $250 gift cards!  Head on over to enter!

Good luck and happy weekend, my friends!

You GO, Little Cassie! I finally got DL to admit he can’t do all the stuff around here that needs to get done, so we will start the bathroom soon…a neighbor who is also a contractor will be installing the tub and sink and we’ll just do the finishing (tiling, paint, floor, etc.) Oh wait! Did I say tile?

I have no doubt that you can tile your back splash in a weekend. I even have faith you can refrain from wine for a few weeks yet.

So exciting!! It’s hard work, but so worth it! (I’m just now recovering from doing mine.) Based off of my recent experience, try to figure out how the tile will meet up with the counter, as well as how to handle the edges FIRST. It’ll save you from some serious heartburn in the end! Good luck!

That kitchen is one of my favorites, the color combo will look amazing in your space! The kitchen is actually by Amie Corley (a St. Louis designer) and was originally featured in Southern Living Magazine. Here is the link –

Hi Margaret! Thank you so much for visiting! The tile is the kirkland tile and I got it at the Tile Shop, but I don’t think they carry it anymore. I just spent 20 minutes trying to find something like it and I can’t seem to find it or anything just like it anywhere. I did find this one at Amazon and it’s the closest in shape and color, but the texture is different. (This is an affiliate link, BTW, full disclosure!)
