Lamp Black Vintage Child’s Dresser

As promised, I’m back today with a furniture redo!  I found this vintage child’s dresser a few weeks back at a huge yard sale extravaganza weekend (as you can see from my instagram photo, I found LOADS of other items, too!)

I love pieces like this as they are versatile. They are typically not as deep as standard dressers, and the cabinet can be used for so many purposes.  Of course, I wasn’t too keen on the 1950’s nursery motif on the door.

To begin working on this piece, I removed the wooden handles as I knew I wanted to replace those with some more fun knobs.  Once the existing handles were removed, I had to fill all of the holes.  I used my favorite woodfiller, Wunderfil.  I’ve raved about this one before, but it is the best I’ve found and the one I always recommend to people when asked.  It gives a beautiful smooth hole free finish!

To fill the holes, I fill once and allow to dry.  I sand with the orbital sander, and repeat the process until I have a smooth finish where once there was a hole.

Once I had the old holes filled, I drilled new holes in the center of each drawer using these drill bits which I recently got to replace my old rusty ones.  They are SUPER and drill right where I want them to, which is important!

Finally, I sanded the piece all over, sanding especially over the old nursery graphic to smooth.

I then applied 3 coats of Lamp Black by General Finishes.  This paint often takes only 2 coats, but I was going over such a blonde finish that I wanted to ensure solid coverage.

Once it was painted, I distressed all of the edges lightly to give it some character, and then I used Briwax Golden Oak to wax and finish.  I used this wax to give the distressed areas a little more brown to their blonde look.  I allowed the wax to dry and buffed all over with a clean rag.

And finally, this piece received its crowning glory- new painted ceramic knobs from D. Lawless Hardware!  (They carry a great array of ceramic knobs at am amazing price!)

I hauled it over to Sweet Clover before I had a chance to photograph it properly, so you will get to see it in its staged glory!

I am in love with these knobs!

The marks you see below are just dust from our hands from when we moved it…. oops!  What can I say, no matter how much we clean it, the barn is just a place that gets dirty!black2

And I love how the piece’s details pop now with the light distressing.

We like to stack furniture at Sweet Clover to pack it in as much as possible. Sarah painted this piece on top with General Finishes in Emerald Green.  (It sold).

black7One more look at those pretty new jewels…

black4This piece made its Sweet Clover debut at our September sale. It almost went to a new home, but the couple ended up buying a navy dresser from me instead (for their baby’s room!).  Here it is staged for the Hometalk Hometown Hustle this past weekend….

black6Ha!  Looks like one of the batteries fell out of a letter- oops! 😉

Let’s hope this piece finds a new home at the next sale in a week and a half! 🙂

Have a great Tuesday!  I am off to Sweet Clover to move it and shake it!

Looks great! that’s the same basic design as the one we have in Abe’s nursery (that was originally Dave’s dads)…those little drawers are so perfect to put baby/toddler clothes in without them getting buried and lost.
