Ok, so this cabinet is for me and for my own home, so I am a little excited. So excited in fact that it as dark out by the time we got it up to the dining room tonight, but I couldn’t wait to show you, so the pictures aren’t the best. But you had to see it! I found it on Craigslist last week and it was pictured with a couple other images. One was a huge armoire and then there was this cabinet. The prices were listed at $200 for the modern armoire, and $15 for this china cabinet. I actually emailed to make sure that the price was right, and told the seller if the price was in fact $15, I wanted it! So here it is before…
And here it is now!! I painted the exterior in Alabaster, and the interior in an oops gray. Then I distressed it by hand and went over it all in Minwax Golden Oak stain. It’s a little shorter than the other cabinet I have, and a tad more antiqued, but I love it! It’s got more storage and will go with the new curtains I ordered nicely! :)(and pardon my diet coke I left on the table in the picture… along with my Sawyer’s squishy blue dolphin)
This weekend when I went to Home Depot to pick up more KILZ oil-based primer, I happened to spot a new KILZ with a green label which is water-based and zero, zilch, nada VOC. Now picture me doing a happy dance in the primer aisle of Home Depot. I couldn’t wait to get it home and try it out! I knew I was going to keep the cabinet so I tried it out on this piece. I sanded it, then used two coats of this primer. It dries very quickly, and I was able to add the second coat after an hour. It has more of a brownish tint to it and appears to not be stopping bleeding as well as regular KILZ, but it actually did. And the adhesion was great! It is certainly not as good as the oil-based primer, but it is pretty darn close, and for zero VOC I’ll take it. The best part is that this primer retails around $20, but now through September 10th there is a $5 mail-in rebate. I definitely will be using this from now on, but will keep the oil-based on hand as well for areas of major bleeding. Anyhow, I thought this information was worth sharing! So get to Home Depot and get your green labeled KILZ!
