Hope you all had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend! I hope you spent some time to enjoy your freedoms and reflect upon those who have died for us so that we have them. I expressed my own freedoms this weekend by repainting our guest bathroom and I am happy to share my pale pink bathroom reveal with you today. I also have a $100 Ace Hardware giveaway! And I say reveal loosely… the paint is done, but there are still some things to take care of. We desperately need a new light fixture, and I also ordered a new shower curtain coming soon. But this is a great start!
Did you know that Ace’s top brand of paint, Clark & Kensington, has a line inspired by OPI? I know I always love OPI colors and tend to choose them based loosely entirely on their fun names. As a member of the Ace blogger panel, my project for May was to select one of the new OPI color palettes from the Paint Studio. Honestly, at first I was pretty stumped because all of the palettes were out of my comfort zone. I guess not a lot of people wear navy, black, and brown nail polish. 😉 But after studying them for a while, it dawned on me that the “Creative Genius” was exactly the same palette as succulents. Check out a room designed around this theme, and click on the palettes to see all of the colors in it.
Once I realized that I could plan my entire project around succulents, I was off and running! I planned to gather lots of plants and paint my bathroom pale pink, but one evening as I was perusing pinterest, I came across a print I adored from Printable Quirks.
More details coming later on how I took it from an 8×10 printable to a large scale piece of art. For now, just know that this piece helped inspire the entire space.
And before I go any further, let me give you a quick reminder of where this bathroom started.
I knew I wanted to neutralize the vanity, which was pale blue, and bring soft pink to the walls. The gray trim was also going to have to go but I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go white or black on that, so I saved that for last.
I selected “Bubble Bath” from the OPI Creative Genius for the walls and had it mixed Clark & Kensington Paint and Primer in One Premium Satin Enamel which is perfect for a bathroom. For the vanity, I selected Swiss Coffee which is a lovely warm white. I had that mixed in a high gloss finish as I wanted to reflect more light in this space. It only has one window, and we have to have a shade on it for privacy reasons, so it doesn’t get a lot of natural light.
To prepare everything, I removed all knobs, switch plates, and removed the existing mirror, which was just a builder grade mirror I framed. I filled any nail holes with spackle and sanded it down; I sanded the vanity with my orbital sander, and sanded the details by hand.
The paint I used is paint and primer in one, so I was able to get right to work after that. The vanity took 3 coats of paint, and the walls took 2.
The vanity has a great shine to it now and reflects light beautifully.
Once everything was painted, I knew that black was where I wanted to go for the trim and doors. I used a paint I had on hand and got to work.
Finally, I was able to add the accessories back in and hang art and the new mirror! This mirror was a lucky yard sale find. It is vintage, malachite look, but truly made with paper over some sort of board. It’s not in perfect condition, but I just love it!
I wanted to bring in nature inspired accents aside from the art and mirror as well. To the left of the sink I placed some bottles and feathers, lotion, and a vintage ceramic bird on a vintage lucite and mirrored tray. And to the right of the sink, I placed a couple orchids (one that I am hoping will grow back!), and hand soap.
Next to the toilet I put the crate of magazines back… we want you to be comfortable and have entertainment while you use our guest bathroom.
And I really wanted to get a tall skinny cactus for next to the toilet, but Chris had concerns about his bum being near a cactus. So I opted for a snake plant, which is also tall and skinny. And it won’t hurt him.
And finally, I should mention the rug. I wanted to bring a little punch to the space and found this great vintage rug a couple weeks ago at a yard sale. It was the perfect size to use as a bathmat and added the touch I was looking for.
And I can’t wait to show off the new shower curtain when it arrives… it’s perfect for this space!
I am happy that I really pushed myself out of my comfort zone for this project. It’s exciting to try something totally new!
