One Room Challenge Week 2: Hallway and Staircase Progress

Hey guys!  I am back with a quick update for the One Room Challenge week 2, sharing the progress I’ve made on my hallway and staircase.  If you missed the original plans, you can check them out here.  I’ve gotten quite a bit of the painting done on this space, but to be fair, I started a little ahead of time.  My kids are out of school next week, and I wanted to make sure that their Spring break wouldn’t set me back.  Let’s hop in and take a look at what’s been painted so far…

Painted-Stair-RailsPin

I spent a good amount of time sanding the staircase handrail spindles on the main level as well as the section upstairs.  I also hand sanded all of the baseboards and door trim in the upstairs hallway.  Talk about tedious…. but the good news is my shoulders look better!

Sanded Stair RailsPin

Once they were sanded I primed them with the most toxic primer there is… Kilz oil based original.  Yes, I know how awful it is for you, but with details like this where I want the best adhesion possible and I never ever never ever want to repaint again, it was the only primer for the job.  I’ve had to redo too much trim that was primed with a primer that was touted as sticking to everything… once burned, baby!  I gave everything 2-3 coats of primer, and then 2 coats of paint (I’ve use Benjamin Moore’s Aura semi-gloss in Simply White throughout the house).

Painted trim Pin

And as you can see, I painted the wall at the top of the stairs black!  I normally use Benjamin Moore or Clark & Kensington, but Sherwin Williams was having a 30% off sale, plus I had a $15 off coupon, so I had them color match my wall white (BM Cloud Cover) and purchased a gallon of Tricorn black in Satin.

Black Hallway WallPin

The artwork is temporary, but the layout will stay the same, as I really like it.  Aside from painting, I removed the old railing (which will be replaced with rope railing) and went to town with joint compound as well as patch and paint to prepare the wall for painting.  Once I patched all of the holes and gouges, I allowed it to dry, sanded it, and primed over those areas.  And obviously I have help… if you consider dog fur floating into paint helpful.  It adds texture, right?

Stairwell in progressPin

That’s it so far!  Next week don’t expect much since the kids will be out… but I am considering handing them paint brushes. 😉

Head on over to Calling it Home to check out the designers’ progress as well as the linking participants’ progress!

The contrast is lovely! And I hear ya on the primer thing. I have a corner in our house that we ‘primed’ and I have to redo it all two years later. Blech.

I don’t blame you! I’ve painted stair spindles once and don’t ever want to do it again. LOOOOOVE those black walls! Tricorn Black is probably my favorite black ever. I was trying to explain it to my mom once and was like, “It’s a deep, milky black.” She looked at me all puzzled 😀
