Hey guys! I am excited today because this past weekend we made some good progress for One Room Challenge week 3 and I can see the plan starting to come together.
Today I actually have some much prettier photos than last week’s update and will share with you the new paint color as well as as some of the other items that I’ve ordered or found for this space. Before I show you the new color, let’s all pause for a moment and take one last look at these black walls.
I went black with these walls a couple of years ago and have never once regretted it. The moody dark color felt cozy and perfect for that space. However, we don’t use the guest room as much as I thought we would, and who needs a room that doesn’t get much use when the house isn’t big to begin with… not us!
When we decided to make it Emmy’s room, she was thrilled to select a new wall color. She specifically wanted a room with a Mexican boho feel to it, and she wanted vibrant colors, but a softer wall color. I kid you not… my 9 year old communicated to me that this is what she wanted without prompting from me. She may have a career ahead of her! I pulled out my Clark & Kensington fan deck, and let her mull it over for a week. She narrowed it down to four choices including a pale sherbet orange, a soft barely there pink, light mint, and a pale aqua. I loved all of the colors she was contemplating, so I was no help. I also didn’t want my opinion to color her final choice (pun not intended). This room was going to become hers, and I wanted her to really feel the ownership (because maybe, just maybe, PLEASE DEAR GOD MAYBE, this ownership will help her be more responsible and tidy!) After thinking and talking it over, Emmy selected “Aqua Mist” by Clark & Kensington, which is a gorgeous soft minty aqua. The folks at Ace Hardware were kind enough to supply the paint for this project.
I prepped on Saturday by using Dap patch and paint to fill all the existing nail holes. I allowed that to dry, and sanded it down smooth. Sunday, I got to work with the paint. With the first coat on, I was a little nervous, but I was painting a very light color over dark, so it didn’t look as true to color at first. BY the time I applied the second coat, it was glorious! Even painting a light color over the black walls, I only needed two coats of paint as Clark & Kensington is paint and primer in one. I did use a third coat on the areas I had to cut in with a brush though. And here it is in its new shade…It’s funny because so much of the furniture is staying in the room, but wow, what a dramatic difference a wall color can make! And I have to be honest… I wasn’t sure that the kilim rug would work with the wall color but I was holding onto hope. And I just love it! The rug is a nice bright contrast. Below you can a glimpse of the pendant I am hoping to use, but it needs rewiring and I’ve never done that.
The mirror over the desk was a vintage find (similar here) and I love that the black really brings the darkness of the rug to the wall and helps unify it, but the white midcentury desk keeps it light. Emmy and I found the midcentury black iron stool at an antique shop (similar here) and she fell in love with it and pretty much begged me for it. #icantsaynotoher
You may have also noticed the artwork over the bed. Emmy and I found this vintage painting at a yard sale this summer for $7 and we loved the colors and design and were hoping to use it in her room. She’s currently at school as I work, and the last she saw of the room was just the wall color and everything else pretty much a mess… so it hasn’t yet been Emmy approved. So maybe it will stay there, and maybe it won’t. I love it and hope she does, too. While Emmy was at school, the headboard also got a fresh coat of white paint. It was looking a little dingy next to the pretty walls.
One of the reasons that Emmy really wants this room is that it’s got more space to allow for Snowball to sleep with her. If you read yesterday’s post and saw their costume pairing, you know how much these girls adore each other. Well, a month ago, I stumbled upon this beautiful white wicker vintage trunk, and I almost didn’t get it, even for just $10, because I didn’t have a space for it. (Similar here). But as I was looking at it, the neatest thing happened when I opened it… it opened not up, but out.
The plan is for this to be Emmy’s nightstand as well as dog bed for Snowball. We’ll just make her some pillows and then she can just curl up in there each night (it will stay open!).
Because it’s wicker and not flat and Emmy loves to have bedside water, a tray is a necessity. I scored this vintage flamingo tray at a local antique shop which is perfect for her room.
Let me show you some of the other things that I’ve found and ordered for this room.
This basket was a Goodwill score, and I have been hoarding it, waiting for the right reason to pull it out. It’s going to be perfect to store 3% of her 892 stuffed animals.
This room currently has one set of sheets that none of us like, so new sheets were needed since Emmy’s moving from a full to a queen size bed. On a recent trip to Target, I found these “cool burst” minty tribal print sheets in queen. (I actually really wanted to get her these woodland whimsy sheets, but they don’t carry queen in store).
A friend gave me this inspirational notepad last year, and the color is perfect and looks lovely on Emmy’s desk. She loves to write and dream, so I think this notepad will be well suited for her.
As you can see from the images above, I’ve removed the curtains from the room as well as the previous curtain rods. They will relocate to inside the double closets along the wall that faces the bed, and I’ve ordered 4 of these panels.
As for the windows, they of course need treatments, but I decided to keep it simple. Just as in our other bedrooms and in our living room, we will be using Blindster blinds in the same style and finish we have throughout. Since we will have curtains in the closets, I think this clean and simple look in the windows will work well.
Apparently I can’t get enough pom poms, and I ordered this $15 bed skirt from Amazon… with pom poms! The reviews say that it is white as described and not creamy as show, so I am counting on it.
I think that about does it for this week! I tried to get a lot done as Emmy and I are taking a mother daughter road trip this weekend and won’t be around to tackle anything major. So next week, don’t expect anything big, OK? 😉
