Welcome to One Room Challenge Week 4…. the one where I freak out, yell obscenities, and run in circles accomplishing nothing. If you want to see all of the updates up this point, click here. Although 2 weeks are teeeechnically still left truly we have less than that because we need to finish the space and get it photographed, edited, and posted! Throw in there that the weekend before it’s over, Emmy will be Tweedle-Deeing it in the school play and I will be volunteering at the performances. To be honest though… I should be panicking, but I really am not. Even if I don’t finish on time, I am so much closer to having our hallway and stairs finished how I like them than I have been in our 5 years of living here, so that alone is an accomplishment. (Pardon me while I pat my own back at even a little progress. 😉 ). No matter what I will be happy, and am grateful to Linda at Calling it Home for hosting this challenge and lighting a fire under my derriere.
This week I don’t have a lot to show as the kids were on break last week and I didn’t even look at a paint brush. We traveled this weekend as well, so nothing happened then as well aside from working on the design of my sister-in-law’s bedroom. Monday and Tuesday the weather here was gloomy and chilly, zapping me of all motivation. Tuesday I gave myself a pep-talk and pushed myself to at least order the last of what I needed, and I scheduled a little late afternoon photo shoot with my kids after play practice for the wall.
Let’s talk about what I ordered first…
The rope hand rail parts! I used Knot & Rope Supply to purchase three of these pieces- one for each end, and one for the center. They do offer end pieces that cap off the ripe and hide the ends, but I want to make knots on my ends.
Currently we’ve been living without a railing and it’s driving Sawyer berserk. Here’s the situation as of now to refresh your memory:
The wall opposite the railing is where the rope will go. As for the actual rope you can order by the foot from Knot & Supply, but I found a 1.5″ thick fitness rope on Amazon that I decided to purchase instead as I got 10 extra feet for the same price and I need 10 extra feet for mistakes. Ha! Fitness rope…. railing. Whatever. Now if I could get that guy to come help me with this project…. he looks like he could whip my butt in shape so that I would be done in time.
On the wooden railing with the spindles, I want to bring some of the black over, so I’ve purchased these large tassels from Amazon as well.
Thanks to my friend Julia for the tassel idea!
Today I am on my way to pick up the doors we selected from Metrie (more on that next week!)
, so I wanted to get the hardware ordered as well. I selected simple modern shaped antique brass by Schlage from Amazon. I purchased 3 that lock, and one dummy knob for our closet.
Everything is arriving today so at least as of today, I will have all I need to make this happen.
I’ve talked a lot about new art for this space with the DIY quote art I am creating as well as some fun new gold foil art. You may recall I mentioned swapping out the photos as well for new black and white photos of the kids. I loooove the old ones… I mean, they are my kiddos on the beach having fun together, so of course I do; but I wanted something newer that showed their personalities. Here’s the current photo situation.
The two horizontal pieces will become my quote art, and the two vertical will be replaced with new photos. Tuesday evening I had a 5 minute photo shoot and here are some of the new shots I will be choosing from.
Sawyer is generally a little awkward when it comes to having his photo taken, and I asked him to be a little silly in some as well, but I am pleased with how these turned out. I think this first one is the money shot. He’s currently growing his hair out and has told me he wants “Beatle hair” which makes my heart melt a little. I love his hair longer, and I love his name for it.
With Emmy, I had a couple come out blurry, but I love these. If I use the first of Sawyer’s I will most likely use the first of hers, but I do truly love that fish face!
Next week I will head to Costco or Staples to get my art and photos printed and I can’t wait to get them up on the wall. Just thinking of it gives me all the feels! I’ll also be painting doors for days next week. 🙂
That wraps up week 4! You can find all the designers sharing their progress here, and find all of the guest participants (like me!) here.
