Our Insanely Ugly Bathroom Becomes…..

… a little less ugly!  There is no hope for this bathroom, unless we want to add on or totally redo it.  It’s off our master bedroom, but far from being a master bath.  Where’s my double vanity?  Where’s my clawfoot tub?  And the gorgeous stone shower?  You won’t find them here.

Eventually we would like to replace the floor tile with a black and white retro tile and replace the wall tile with white beadboard.  That’s not in the budget at the moment, so after hemming and hawing over what to do to make it more livable, I reached some viable solutions.  I found some affordable stainless steel shelving at IKEA that fit the wall above the toilet perfectly.  I also selected a paint color, “Whale Gray” from Benjamin Moore. (However, I should add that I had Sherwin Williams color match it since they had a huge 40 percent off paint sale last weekend!).
I painted the bathroom Monday while the kids were at school- no taping required as I was careful with my angled brush.  My husband and I hung the shelving today, and I added a little striped tray from IKEA, some galvanized buckets I had on hand from IKEA (3 of them, perfect fro sorting my light, medium, and heavy days- you ladies know what I am referring to!), some canvas totes from Bed Bath & Beyond, some glass canisters from IKEA, and some cute numbered jars my mom gave me a couple years ago.  I also added a fabulous print from Kantan Designs, painted the horrible old and worn chrome base to the light fixture, and added 2 gray Donna Karan hand towels I found at Marshall’s.  Oh, and I added an old wooden soap box under the sink to hold my cosmetics.  And here is the result, like I said, it’s just a little less ugly.

And now, I will leave you with this image to scar you…. our ugly floor, close up…. Believe it or not, I just cleaned it.  It never looks clean, it’s that old and icky.

Love the paint color! You have given me hope. My master bathroom ummm if you can believe is worse than what you started with. Think 1970 yellow tile, mustard sink and toilet and yellow, avocado, and mustard counters oh and of course lovely tan stained cabinets. Someday I’ll get to it:) Thanks for the hope!

Oh I think it is a huge improvement. It looks fabulous. I love your shelves and the color. I rented a steamer and cleaned some tile in a house and it just sparkled afterwards. You might give it a try. Then I sealed the grout and it stayed gorgeous. Love your new look. Hugs, Marty

I know what you mean about tile grout. To say the least it is difficult. I actually thought your before’s were cute, although the after is very fresh and stylish. Love the wood box under the sink.

Pfft, who needs a big bathroom anyway?

I’m only saying that because mine is ridiculously small and sad too, but you have made it SHINE!

I’m inspired to kick mine up a notch. Fantastic job Cassie.

Cassie, we ripped tile out of our last house and put beadboard up and it was doable, both financially and effort wise. That is all that bathroom needs to sing. And a clawfoot tub. Somewhere.

Love that color on the walls! You should check out the restore in Pasadena… I was there yesterday and they have lots of tiles…I didn’t check colors because I wasn’t really looking, but I did see that it was a good price. Also, Second Chance in Baltimore sells tile pretty darn cheap. If you decide to go to Second Chance, call me .. I want to go!

I had a floor just like that in a rental a few years back and its always looked dirty because it was old so I can relate. I cleaned it, srcubbed it and even tried to steam clean the dirt out with no success! Nice job on your re~do!

I LOVE the paint color Cassie, and the shelves are awesome in there. You could always replace the floor and paint the tile on the walls. With the room being so small the tile would be reasonable. Then it would be perfect!

That’s a terrific make over. I especially love the shelves. My only suggestion would be a bathroom rug, maybe in a nice gray. That would make it warmer underfoot and hide some of the floor.
