Paris Gray Vintage Bed

Before I share the subject of my title…. someone help us!  Deer keep eating our plants!!!  We’ve put up chicken wire, marigolds, and even tried bobbex, but they just keep coming.  If anyone has a sure fire and safe environmentally friendly method of stopping the deer, please let me know.  Maybe I should put Jake on garden watch….

Anyhow, the past couple weeks I’ve been so focused on the barn that I haven’t painted anything.  But I never shared this bed I painted an embarrassingly long time ago last summer.  I loved its vintage cut out details.  Here’s what it looked like to begin with….

Pin

It was a standard mahogany finish, but as you can see pretty scratched up.  I went to work with a favorite color of chalk paint, Paris Gray.  I gave it two coats, lightly distressed it, and then sealed it with a clear wax.  I then buffed it to finish with a rag.  I never shared it because I forgot to get a great photo of it…. Here was my original after with a photobomb by Emmy in weird dress up clothes riding her way too small old big wheel… Less than desirable for an “after” shot. πŸ˜‰

Pin

beds can be hard to fit when you have a small space, so the bed made it to the barn once but was never fully set up.  Well, we finally had a chance to set it up properly for the first Sweet Clover sale.
I thought I would share it with you all set up….

One of the shots in yesterday’s post actually showed me loading it up as it was one of the first pieces of furniture to go Friday morning!

Hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday… we have nothing on the schedule for today except for a little get together this evening (and an early morning run with friends).  I am looking forward to a day with no plans.  I think the kids and I need it!  Maybe I will let them hang out in their pj’s for a while….

When I lived in Alaska and the moose were bothering my flowers, we got dried blood. It was some nasty stuff, but I guess it helped. You can also use a coyote urine-type spray. I don’t expect that would be all that pleasant either. Good luck! The bed is very pretty!

Put down Milorganite, it is pellets of organic “matter” and ALWAYS deters the deer. I have to put it down every couple of months, but it’s also a fertilizer so it’s a win-win. You can get it from Lowes near the Lime. If its rabbits that are eating your plants this stuff won’t help, but put it on everything and the deer will stay away!

What a beautiful bed! So glad it found a happy home! … I’m having trouble with bunnies eating everything. I’ve tried liquid fence, but not sure it really works. And geez that stuff stinks!

Try soap. Deer want to avoid humans and therefore the human scent. Take a bar of soap and shred/grate it into your garden. Now this won’t last forever since it will wash away but it is cheap and won’t require a trip to the store so it’s worth a shot!

Gorgeous as always. But can I just say how fabulous to have deer in your garden! I’m sure you don’t think so but imagine if I said the kangaroos were annoying, you’d probably think that was cute (or maybe not?!). I’m imagining bambi frolicking around with thumper, sigh! Can’t help sorry, too caught up in the romance of it all πŸ˜‰

I have to add my comment about your deer! I gave up!
They have eaten every flower I put out! I get the creeps thinking about how they actually came up to my front door to have their dinner!
I know have ferns! Good luck! No one here has a solution either!

Get a scarecrow – not your typical overalls and funny hat. This is a device that hooks up to your hose and shoots water at anything that enters your garden. No one gets hurt. We used it to keep the neighborhood cats out of ours and it worked like a charm!
Here’s a video of how it works:

    Gotta love youtube!

I have two tips to deter deer. I have tried both at the same time and they seemed to work as I have not seen a dear in my yard for years. Deer fear humans so soap specifically Irish Spring Soap keep them at bay. I put a full bar into a knee high nylon and tied it inside a shrub they started to nibble on, They other tip is human hair. Go to a salon and ask for the hair clippings (yes, from the floor) and sprinkle them on the ground around your flowers and shrubs. Refresh every month or so.

String fish-line all around your garden at several heights. They bump into it and they can’t see it and it spooks them. PS Your bed is adorable!

The only thing I know about keeping deer out of your lawn is from those commercials with the crazy looking digital deers. They are really stupid commercials and obviously ineffective because I don’t know the product name. Good luck!
