Peachy bedroom makeover
Do you remember when I said we were kicking off the Emmy’s first year of high school with a bedroom mini-makeover? Well, that was the plan, but you know what they say about plans, especially in the 2020s. Everything was in place, but we waited months for her organic cotton duvet cover to arrive finally in late November. With the timing of the holidays, I decided to hold off on sharing and kick off 2022 with her bright and happy space that says so much about who she is. Today, I am excited to finally share her peachy bedroom makeover with you.

Peachy bedroom makeover design plan
When we first moved into this house three years ago, Emmy selected a new bed – the gold canopy – and chose to make her room neutral and cozy. I was a little surprised since before that, her vibe had always been colorful and whimsical. But I am always one to welcome change and create the design that my kids desire, so we rolled with it. Here’s a glimpse of what it looked like Christmas of 2020:
Mohawk reached out to me last summer and asked if I’d be interested in creating a “Back to School” bedroom for one of my kids. Just a week before that, Emmy had begged for a peach – as in the fruit – body pillow at Target. I had agreed and felt a little, “There’s my color-loving girl.” I offered her the opportunity to bring more color into her room with this project and she bit! We quickly got to work, selecting the rug first and creating a design board around that.
The results
While I let Emmy select new accessories for her space, we mostly worked with things she already had in place, such as the wallpaper, bed and other furniture.
The rug was one of the first pieces to arrive and I was determined to get it in place. Chris and I have very different methods of working so after a few minutes of “disagreeing” I told him I would do it myself. Lemme tell you, it was challenging to get it under that canopy bed alone, but where there’s a stubborn grown woman, there’s a way. And once completely unrolled and in place, I could see that it was worth my efforts. The room immediately felt warm and joyful. Like my personality.
As all of these accessories rolled in, the new space came together.
As you can see, Emmy opted to remove the curtains from the bed – so that we can now admire her squishmallow squad – and instead we hung faux vines across the canopy. I used gold floral wire to secure the vines in place.
Probably my favorite of the pieces she chose to accessorize her bedroom is this Harry Styles tarot card tapestry. If Taylor Swift or Billie Eilish aren’t playing on her Echo, then it’s One Direction or Harry Styles.
You can also spot that peach body pillow along the back of her bed, plus a couple of new additions she selected from Society6 (here and here). As you can see, the peachy orange rug and the peach pillow really influenced to the other choices she made.
If you look closely below, you can also see the peach seashell table lamp she picked. I don’t know what on earth she is searching in the bar to find these things, but it’s a pretty fun little addition.
Facing her bed is her closet wall which also features a shelving unit for her books and things like collectible erasers. I have to admit, erasers these days are pretty adorable.
Above the shelving unit, we hung new art Emmy picked out at Society6 (aloha and howdy) and framed them in wooden frames made to fit perfectly.
Lastly, I want to show you her wallpapered desk wall with her new rug and space. When she was choosing a rug, one rule I had was that it had to work with the wallpaper I had put up just over a year ago because there was no way I was taking that down. I was a little skeptical at first about peaches working with the paper, but upon closer inspection I saw that her wallpaper truly had every color of the pastel rainbow in it and knew it would work. (Also, she asked me to point out that she hasn’t changed her calendar since March 2021 and she apologizes. Haha.)
She and I are both absolutely thrilled with this mini-makeover that stemmed from a happy new rug! This rug is the perfect balance of a touch of color with neutral (meaning, not too much for my eyes!), it’s a nice soft pile so she’s comfortable sitting on the floor and it exudes a bohemian vibe.
The best part about putting this look together for Emmy is that I feel like she’s come back to who she is and what kind of environment she thrives in. She’s a creative and funny soul and this room feels like her with its colors and the humor illustrated throughout her choices in art and accessories.
While we missed the boat on a back-to-school bedroom post, this peachy bedroom makeover reveal feels much more like a “back-to-you” kind of post because that’s what it’s all about.
