Piece of Work Wednesday Furniture Link Party Number 46: Mint Green for Michelle!

Happy POWW!  Starting the party early today as I have too much to do later… It certainly has been quite the week here, and I am kept busy with VBS this week as well (I am the photographer!)  This weekend is also already booked with deliveries, baby shower, house hunting, and spin class.  It’s only Tuesday and I am already looking forward to a slower pace next week.  I also can’t thank you all enough for the prayers I know you are sending out for Cora.  Hopefully we will know this week if Andrew or Grace will be a bone marrow match.  I will keep you posted on that as well if there are any fundraising efforts that are put forth.  If one of the children is a match, Cora will be home for a few weeks in August before the transplant which would be at the end of the month.   I will happily find out what items might be needed and people could ship them to me, and I will deliver to them.  Anyhow, I will certainly keep you all  up to date, and am so grateful for all of you.

Over a month ago I found a great bowfront dresser on craigslist for $50.

When I went to pick it up, the seller removed her clothes and realized there was a hole in the bottom drawer and asked me if I would still take it if I could have it fro $20.  Yes please! I know how to replace drawer bottoms, but since this was a curved front drawer bottom I wanted a hand from my dad.  A couple weeks ago I finally was able to get to my parents house and my super handy dad who can pretty much figure out anything helped me with it.  So once the drawer was fixed, it was ready!  I had a plan for it, but sometimes plans don’t always work out.   I hit some glitches.

After I commented on this post by Michelle, which featured beautiful images such as this…

Michelle asked me if I had ever painted anything mint green.  I had, but it had only been the inside of a cabinet.  I thought I would give it a whirl.  I mixed up some Annie Sloan chalk paints- some Provence, some Antibes Green, and some Old White.  And it created a beautiful mint green color!  I started to remove the hardware. 
Glitch one: One screw was so stripped that it was not coming out.  I put all the rest of the hardware back on and decided to paint the hardware with it.  Thankfully chalk paint sticks to metal!
So I painted it all with two coats of my custom color.
Glitch two:  It was such a pretty color, but I wanted to antique it a little more after distressing so I waxed it and then I tried the Annie Sloan dark wax and I hated it on this color.  My soft pretty color went from a soft pretty mint green to a dirty green.  So I painted back over it and was happier again.
And here it is now… it’s not my favorite color, but it certainly was fun to do something in this mint green.

    I found that mineral spirits wiped over the unwanted wax quickly removes it. 🙂

    Your custom color turned out great! I love that dresser – so cute!! I really hope for your friend that one of her daughter’s siblings are a donor match!! And even though the offer wasn’t quite what you wanted, I’m glad they’re starting!! Still hoping for that crazy firework, manical laughing post! 😉

    PRETTY!!! It’s not my favorite color either, but it came out really pretty! My friend has a pretty dresser in almost the same color and it looks really pretty in her bedroom. Great job!

    I just read about Cora and Heather and their family, many prayers are going out for them and I pray that there is a match.
    I love the color that you mixed up, so pretty! My grandparents had a dresser very similar to that, you did a wonderful job on it my dear. 🙂

    I think it looks GREAT!! and you did a great job at mixing colors. I would have expected a lighter green rather than mint. This came out REALLY WELL!!

    I love the dresser, Cassie! I think you did a beautiful transformation. When we bought our house the whole house was mint green, from head to toe. Carpet, walls, counter tops, the exterior and even the original homeowner who gave us a tour once we were in escrow was standing there in a mint green pant suit. I think your dresser would look great in a nursery or a child’s room!

    Okay, apparently I didn’t get enough sleep last night. I just read your post, and was thinking, “What? The owner removed her clothes?” Took a minute to click that you meant she removed her clothes from the dresser 🙂

Welcome to my favorite time of the week- time for POWW!  I love seeing all the lovely furniture makeovers and builds you all come up with!  It’s so inspiring.  This week I have a dresser to share.  I found this last week at the Salvation Army when I had a bum day at the auction.  This dresser made it up to me and cost just $45.  It is solid wood, and simple, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do to it.  Here it is after a good sanding.

 See my purple shoes over there… I flooded the laundry sink last week and didn’t realize it until I stepped into a big puddle with those shoes.  Oops.  I refinished the top, and just lightly sanded out most of the scratches in it. Then I put some stain conditioner on it.  I thought I was going to stain it, but it turned out I loved the color it already was once I could see it with the conditioner.  So I just gave it a paste wax finish to keep it more rustic and natural.  I primed the body with my Kilz clean start.  I planned on using chalk paint, but I have found that it adheres better with a little primer.  I just trust it so much more that way.  I never want someone to get something home and be able to scratch the paint off!  Don’t get me wrong, I love chalk paint!  It adheres very well, but there are a couple spots here and there where it hasn’t worked as well as I would have wanted.  Anyhow, I used duck egg blue on the body and old white on the drawers.  I know they say to wax and then distress, but I distressed and then waxed with natural paste wax.  Here it is now!

    Love! Great colors. Ok, business question. Do your customers seem to prefer the bright pieces/ one of a kind sort of think or do the basic white/ light colors sell better. Any thoughts?

    Cassie – I love the finish you did on that dresser. I’m actually in the process of finishing my first piece of furniture, but I’m so nervous to do anything with it. The plan is to stain the top and paint the lower half – but we’ll see what happens. Are we allowed to post projects that aren’t complete yet? I have tons of questions about refinishing, so I’d love to post my in-process buffet on POWW to see if anyone has tips! (p.s. I’d really love to hear any tips you have!!)
