Starting the party a little early today as I may try to get to bed early tonight. I am on day 3 of having no voice. Let me just say that was some kind of 80’s party I attended!!! Can I just tell you how hard it is to discipline children when one cannot speak? There has been a lot of hand-clapping and whistling for attention around here. And the kids don’t get it…. I will be upstairs, and Sawyer will keep yelling for me, forgetting that I cannot answer him, nor do I plan on running up and down the stairs all day just to answer a simple question. I hope tomorrow I wake up able to speak!
Ok, now onto my transformation for the week. It’s not a dramatic change, but some pieces don’t need that much. I picked up this little guy off craigslist for $25.
I was thinking I might do something to it like this gorgeous little nightstand from Meredith at Welcome to the Heardmont. It had a similar shape and I loved the two-toned look.
I took it outside and sanded it down entirely to the bare wood, which took a total of about 1 hour. It had such beautiful wood, that I decided just to bring it up to date with new stain. I used Minwax Provincial which is kind of a dark walnut. I used a total of 2 coats of stain, and then gave it two coats of tung oil finish, waiting 24 hours between coats. I had wanted to find hardware that had a bit more of a sleek and modern feel, but the holes were 3 1/2″ apart and it was nearly impossible unless I wanted to spend $40 on just the hardware. Um, no thanks. So I opted to reuse the existing hardware, but it needed a cleaning. I used the boil-it-in-baking-soda-in-a-pot-lined-with-aluminum-foil method I was able to remove most of the marks and tarnish. Here is the after…. I am pleased with how it turned out, a little more organic feeling and less glossy, and a little darker than it started. It’s heading to a new home this weekend!
