Piece of Work Wednesday Number 13!

Happy Day!  Hope you guys are all having fun and enjoying the season.  I have been taking it easy with furniture projects, just enjoying little crafty holiday projects, and doing things with my kids.  But, I did make sure to finish a piece to show you today!  I bought this dresser off craigslist and broke my $40 limit because it was worth it… and I was only breaking it by $10.

Pin

When I bought it the seller told me her grandfather had made it.  It is so solid and well made- the drawer bottoms are tongue in groove, and this quality will make them last forever.  It is solid burled oak, and really heavy and also has a beveled mirror.  Some of you at this point are freaking out, and thinking I painted it…. Let me calm those nerves.  I did NOT paint it.  I stripped the finish, and restained it darker.  It was missing a pull though and I couldn’t find a replacement.  There was a mark on each drawer in a rectangular shape where each pull had once been.  Here it is stained darker (I used 3 coats of ebony), and you can see the marks I am referring to.

Pin

So my only option was to find something that would cover up that mark.  I found some black pulls at hobby lobby that almost covered the mark perfectly!

Pin

I painted them with a metallic paint, some antiquing gel, and then some brown craft paint to make them coordinate better with the other pulls that I was keeping on the large drawers.

Pin

Here is the finished product… not much different, but it was such a beautiful piece and I just wanted to keep it as true to its time as I could, while bringing it up to date with a darker finish.  The finish doesn’t show much darker in these pictures from the outdoor light, but you can see that the darker stain has brought out the beautiful wood grain even more.  It belongs in a bungalow, I think!

So beautiful!! I’ve used those Hob Lob pulls before. Love them! You ALWAYS find the best dressers!! There must be more back east since they’re older cities.

Looks like I’ll be the first this week. I’m glad you didn’t paint over it too. It looks great all cleaned up. I think that wood is something called tiger oak. I was at a garage sale a while back and there was this shelf made out of the same material anyway the guy running the g sale said the shelf was pricey because it was made of tiger oak, hmmm. And i thought G sales were for cheap shopping!

    Great work!!!

Wow! What an amazing piece. I’m sure it was difficult for the seller to part with a piece that her grandfather made. But what a nice story to tell the new owner! You did an amazing job of restoring it to it’s natural beauty. Someone will be very lucky to have this piece that will last for generations!

You were spot on with this one – it did not need to be painted. And I think what you did to coordinate the hardware was great. Another lovely piece over here Cassie!

I love the pulls you used to match the old ones ~very pretty! You did a fab job fixing it back up again! (Shhh…I would have loved a painted version of the dresser, too 🙂 )

So glad you didn’t paint over it! It’s beautiful. So I take it you’ve had some non furniture link ups given the all caps warning 😉

That is a beautiful piece. You were right in keeping this one true to its time and just darkening the finish slightly. Great job with the pulls!

Thank goodness you didn’t paint it!! I can’t believe someone lucky enough to have a family piece that beautiful, and that was made by her grandfather!!! would part with it. But, good for you! Again, soooo glad you didn’t cover up that beautiful oak with paint.

I really need one of these Hobby Lobbies that many of you refer to. We definitely don’t have one in Connecticut.

The pulls are great Cassie. I also have a rule as to how much I will spend on a certain type of piece. I too would have broken my rule to purchase that dresser for the price you did…Love it!

That is such a great piece Cassie. It would be hard for me to paint something like that too.

I love, love, love this piece. It is exactly what I’ve had my eye out for-simple craftman style, rich stain. It is so hard to find quality furniture these days and I was so relieved to see that you maintained its original look. You sure get lucky with your finds!

Reading my mind were you? lol, look so good, glad you left it stained. Sometimes that is best. I can too picture it in a cute craftsman bungalow. Hope it finds a good home.

In honor of your great stained piece you saved, I’ll link up an older post of a piece I couldn’t paint either. Is that okay, an older post?
