Happy Monday! I hope you all had an awesome weekend! We had a great weekend with some quality family time as well as some quality alone time for me! ๐ And Sawyer and I had a fabulous birthday- thank you so much for all the birthday wishes!
Speaking of Sawyer’s birthday, my baby is growing up…. he is now 8 years old. When he as just a year old, my parents gave him a fabulous little set of a table and two chairs. It’s travelled with us from house to house and served us well. We had it in this house in his dormer window nook…..
Well, my friends, the time has come… he has outgrown it and was no longer using it to sit and color, but instead using it as a dumping ground for papers. I decided we needed to do something about it so that this space would once again be usable. I went on the hunt for the perfect desk, which had to fit between the walls of the dormer area…. a tight fit! (And as a side note, I am hoping to pass this set on to my brother and his fiancee when the time comes!!!!) It took me a couple weeks, but I found the perfect sized, priced, and boyish desk for him….
Sorry for the cruddy picture, but this was snapped with my phone when I was about to get to work and realized I needed a before. ๐
I already had a great vintage red stool that would pair perfectly with the desk and the colors in his room. Red is his favorite color after all! To keep it masculine, but break up the wood in his room (The wall the window sits near has two wood bookcases), I painted it with General Finishes Milk Paint in Lamp Black. (I did sand it lightly first). It took just two coats of paint and then I lightly distressed it and finished it with General Finishes Clear Wax. (As a little side note, I removed all the hardware and painted it separately in case I ever want to change hardware later). I adore this wax on top of black! I find black is so hard to wax because it shows fingerprints so easily, but this is the one wax that works beautifully with this paint and doesn’t do that. I buffed it to a perfect sheen and am so happy with it! Here it is in his room! And I apologize. It was super hard to photograph since the desk was black, and all the light comes from behind it. I tried with the curtains closed and it looked weird.
Here are the details…
Sawyer’s trophies sit on his window, so now he can stare at them as he works.
He loves his little red stool!
Ready to work…
To give you a little perspective, here is a phone picture, just so you can get an idea f where it sits.
(To see more of his Star Wars room, click here). After I got the desk all set up, I showed it to Sawyer who said “It’s AWEsome!!!” He then proceeded to pull out his math book and tell me he had work to do. I think he’s a happy customer!
