Happy Monday! Hope you had a great weekend! Ours was beautiful and we were able to get a lot done which felt wonderful. One of those things was working a little bit on Sawyer’s room. Last week Sawyer came home from school super excited, a green form to select his elective classes for middle school in hand. He just can’t wait to get there! And it’s definitely time to “grow up” his room a bit, and give him more space for books, legos, his trumpet, and other interests. I’ve had a plan in my head the last couple of months and have worked with Sawyer so that he gets what he wants. This weekend I created Sawyer’s tween room design plan board so that he could visualize the outcome of what is utter chaos at the moment.
If you are familiar with what his room currently looks like you’ll recognize a lot of the same elements as we are working with what we have. And if you’re not, here’s a glimpse!
One change that will dramatically impact the entire space is new paint on the walls. Currently he has one wall that is navy, but he wants a mancave and a place where he can sleep for hours on end, so he’s asked that all the walls be painted navy. We’ll be using Clark & Kensington’s Dark Diversion.
He’s had a pair of twin beds since we moved here, but we decided to upgrade him to a queen. I purchased a frame and boxspring, as well as some basic blue sheets. We’re going to give him our old rustic planked headboard.
For bedding, we are going to reuse his Star Wars pillow shams and he selected the rugby stripe bedding from PBTeen in red and navy. (It’s on backorder until the end of March, but Wayfair carries something very similar here.) We’ll also continue to use the Lego Star Wars pillows my mom designed and created for Sawyer.
On each side of the bed will sit one of the living room room bookcases, and then we plan to create a built in look by connecting them around the bed. We’ll be adding sconces to sides of the bookcase to provide reading light. My friend Cristina just did something very similar in her son’s room and I love it! Check it out here. The bookcases will be filled with all of his books, special photos, trophies, and more. I filled one up the other day.
His gallery wall will stay where it is, but we’ll add the C3PO patent print that hung above his bed, and the flag that hung above his dresser will also be involved in unique manner (if it works out!).
His midcentury dresser that we already had will be moved to the opposite wall from his bed, on the right side of this dormer nook. On the left side of the book I was searching for another midcentury dresser, and it had to have the same vibe, color, height, and be less than 64″ in width. As luck would have it, one of my Sweet Clover vendors, Vintage Mid Century Frederick had one that was perfect for his room! It was in her other location in downtown Frederick so I swung by this weekend and picked it up. So it’s really all coming together!
I also plan on building him a desk like mine in his dormer nook. Here’s mine to give you an idea.
And finally, we’ll reuse the red shag rug he has as he loves it! We have one more exactly like it so we’ll lay them next to one another to create one large rug.
Once I finished creating the design board, I showed Sawyer and he was even more excited about it all! I know that my boys don’t always understand my thought process, so showing them a visual aid is a huge help. We’ve already got painting on our calendar for the weekend of 3/12! This room will take us some time because of all of the plans we have, but we’ll baby step our way through it and by the time he enters middle school, Sawyer will have a room that suits him and is perfect for a tween boy.
