My September Space at Sweet Clover: Earthy, Midcentury, Boho Goodness

Happy Hump Day, guys!  This coming weekend is my first sale as a vendor at Sweet Clover, and I spent this past Sunday finishing up my space.  Emmy helped me with the preliminary set up, but she was with a friend Sunday, so I finished it up on my own and changed things so I could cram a ton of furniture into a small space.  You can’t sell it id it isn’t in the space, right?  There’s enough room to walk at least. 😉 Emmy and I have had a blast gathering goods over the last month and I am excited to share my September space at Sweet Clover… it’s got all of the earthy, midcentury, boho goodness I love. (Also, sidenote, that back of the cabinet in my neighbor’s space is now a walkway we had to create. Didn’t want you to think I left it like that!)

September Space at Sweet Clover by Cassie BustamantePinBack in the days of Sweet Clover ownership, we had a lot of space to fill in the barn so I wasn’t especially picky when it came to vintage finds and furnishings.  I bought things that weren’t necessarily my style, but that I thought would sell.  With just one space to fill, I decided to go into my space loving every single item I put in it.  After all, if it doesn’t sell, it may have to come home with me.  I also knew that if I filled it with things I loved, I would have a cohesive space that truly represented my style.  I am genuinely thrilled with how it came together.  The only thing missing is a little seasonal decor…. I’m bringing a few mums on Thursday to help a bit  Since I hastily decided to join in August, I didn’t really have much time to prep, so seasonal decor just went out the window this time. (Psst, some affiliate links are included below for paints used).

Stacked Midcentury DressersPin

What I lack in seasonal decor, I make up for in dressers.  Dressers are always my favorite pieces to work on as well as the most popular furniture to sell as they’re versatile and make a statement.  You know I always love a good midcentury dresser, but a classic vintage piece in navy blue makes my heart go pitter patter, too.  I painted two dressers in General Finishes Coastal Blue and angled each one on opposing corners along one wall of the space.

This stately dresser had a fantastic shape and awesome original hardware.  I loved the masculine feel it had and tried to honor that with the color.

General Finishes Coastal Blue DresserPinOn the opposite side, a classic vintage dresser in lightly distressed Coastal Blue sits facing in.  I’ve stacked a rattan and a brass trunk on top.  My space is heavy on the wovens, brasses, and blues! You can see the nightstands I shared earlier this week to the left.  Check out that vintage UCLA School of Optometry poster from 1976!  I thought that was pretty rad!

Classic Navy DresserPinI have one more dresser I was able to squeeze into my space, and it’s a black midcentury piece with unique original hardware. The original wood finish was extremely worn and gross, and the wood was stained a cranberry red so black was really the only way to go. On top of it, I placed a white midcentury bookcase that houses many of the smalls Emmy and I found.  And do you see what I see?  The hardest thing for me to put in this space though has to be these seashell macrame hangers… OH how I wanted to keep them! Will power.  I may have consoled myself with a glass of wine after parting with them.

Black Midcentury DresserPinEmmy and I also discovered this wicker chair and had a really hard time putting it in the space because we both loved it.  But how much furniture does one little family truly need? I paired it with the spinet style of desk I am always a sucker for.Vintage Wicker Disc ChairPin

This experience has really allowed me to tap into who I am creatively, and it’s provided great bonding between me and my daughter.  She truly “gets it” and has been the one to find so many of the things you see.

These glass deco horse book ends came to be because of her eyes.  We collected books with pretty colors and interesting titles.  The Golden Unicorn could simply not be passed up!  Walden and Civil Disobedience is one of my favorite books of all time.  Thoreau was probably slightly mad, but also incredibly intelligent and I love how he viewed his environment in relation to himself.  If you have never read it, it’s definitely worth picking up and still very relevant today.

Glass Art Deco Horse BookendsPinEmmy apparently knows how I feel about fabulous horse bookends, because she also brought these marble beauties to my attention. I found the unicorn tray recently and knew that it was just what my space needed.

Vintage Goods at Sweet CloverPinOn the other side of the bookcase are some vintage restroom signs I found as well as a vase I truly wanted to keep… I love its warm colors for this season.

Our space is full of animal decor, as you can tell.  Emmy spied this owl cookie or ginger jar and I thought it was unique to find one shaped like this, so we purchased it.

Owl Ginger JarPinIn addition to animals, we’ve also got a thing for plants.  We found surfaces to host them, planters for them to abide in, and added much life to our space with them.  Most of our plants have been propagated from my own plants and succulents. You can also see the little basket wall I created on the stair rails.

Plants and Planters and Basket Wall at Sweet CLoverPinEmmy and I truly had a blast collecting items and pieces that fit the vibe we were going for.  Seeing it all come together in the space was rewarding for both of us!

If you are local to the Frederick, Maryland or DC area, we’ll be open this weekend, Friday and Saturday from 9-5 and Sunday from 11-4.  Sweet Clover is also hosting a market this weekend so there will be even more vendors outside the barn!  And it looks like it’s going to be a beautiful weekend…. Cheers to that!

What an awesome space you’ve put together! I love all the dressers 🙂 Ari has a wicker chair just like yours, only his is painted red. And I have that same brass with glass circles plant stand….only not nearly as shiny. Maybe I should polish mine…

You and Emmy have great taste! I love everything in the space, especially the blue dressers and the horse bookends. I’ve been hunting for bookends in thrift stores around here and coming up with nothing. Everything in your space looks fabulous.
