Sophisticated Coastal Sideboard

Last Friday while I was busily trying to get all my housecleaning done in the morning, while still in my pj’s, I received a text from a friend…. “There’s a yard sale on my street and it looks like there is some furniture.”

Ugh.  What to do, what to do…. I mean, I needed to get the cleaning done!  I raced through it as fast as I could, threw on my gym clothes, and out the door I went!  I headed to the one I had been told about, and didn’t find anything there.  Well, I lie.  I found one thing… Sawyer is a bit of a history lover, and is especially fond of Lincoln.  I found a miniature bust of Lincoln which I knew he would love.  Only my kid, huh?  At least he idolizes one of the better presidents.  As I pulled out of the neighborhood, I saw a sign for a sale on Main St.  I decided to head over there…. It was all laid out in the back yard and there was nothing of interest to me…. I peeked into the garage and asked “Are you selling what’s in the garage, too?”  The man replied, “well, nothing but the two dressers…”.  Little did he know he was speaking my language!  I hopped on the chance to get this awesome sideboard….

It had great lines!  I sanded it lightly all over, and sanded the top a little harder to get out the scratches.  I then painted it with two coats of my go-to navy blue, which is General Finishes Coastal Blue from Rockler.  I love this paint as it goes in without a primer needed as long as you lightly sand first.  And I only needed to apply two coats!

After I painted it, I lightly distressed the edges, and waxed it with Briwax clear wax also from Rockler. After the wax dried, I buffed it with a rag.

I replaced the cool original hardware on the drawers, but then added some fun mother of pearl knobs to the cabinets to lend to that sophisticated beachy look.  Here it is now….

I just love this piece an wish I had a place for it!

And all this painting with this color got me thinking…..

I love pieces like this. They are so functional – they can be a liquor cabinet (and server on top), a tv console, hold china in a dining room, craft supplies, toys….the options are endless. Love the blue on this piece and those knobs! You are speaking my language girl.

LOVE! I’m fascinated by all shades of blue, and wouldn’t have thought to do a navy (though I painted my son’s bedroom furniture in a denim blue) It reminds me of a piece one of my friends did…it was ‘a bleeder’ sideboard similar in size and shape, deep reddish stain…anyway, she painted it then distressed it and let it bleed. It was gorg, but not as stunning as yours!
