Thrift Score Thursday 38: It’s a Thrift Store Halloween!

October 23, 2014 by Cassie 32 Comments

Happy Thursday! We are back with another installation of Thrift Score Thursday, and this week it’s all (er, mostly) about Halloween, baby!  Ok, well MY find is Halloween, and next week we will be looking to see your Halloween thrift scores, especially what costumes you can make from them!  Before I share you my features and my own costume find, let me remind you to check out my amazing cohosts this week.  Brynne and Trisha are the originators and ever present hostesses with the mostest, and this week we have two very special guest hosts, Corinna from For My Love Of, and Stephanie from Sandpaper & Glue!  You won’t want to miss their features and finds!

A quick recap if you are new here on how it works:  You thrift, share your finds on instagram or twitter using the thrift score thursday hashtag #thriftscorethursday , and we feature our favorite finds, plus we each share a find of our own!

I always have so much fun looking through the #thriftscorethursday photos on istagram.  Of course, I am also insanely jealous of the amazing things you find. 🙂

This week these are the scores that caught my eye!

Love this collection of children’s books from An Inspired Nest!  They are so colorful and fun and I happen to have the same Fairy Tale one!

Be sure to head over to instagram to follow her!

Next up, Amber from Wills Casa found this dresser that I would love to get my hands on!  She passed it up as she had nowhere to put it…. sometimes walking away is so hard.  Props to you, Amber!

Head on over to instagram to follow her!

Now it’s my turn to share what I’ve found!  My kids are still at the age where they know what they want to be for Halloween, so I work with that.  It’s not like, “Hey let’s see what we can find at the thrift shop and you can be that” which would make my life easier.  But, I’m happy for them in their decisions…. Emmy is going to be Audrey Hepburn and I searched high and low for the right dress and finally ordered from Amazon.  Sawyer wants to be a dwarf from The Hobbit.  Here is the inspiration for his look… (image source)

The one he wanted to be in particular was Kili, who can be found to the left of the very rotund red headed dwarf.  Basically, I looked at this image and saw lots of dark colors and layers with leather and fur, so we started rolling with that.  I found him a faux fur vest at TJ Maxx (actually a women’s small, but the length is perfect on him for a dwarf!).  He is going to wear dark pants, and then as luck would have it I found the perfect gauzy brown piece with faux leather vest panels at the Salvation Army!  It was apparently part of a Star Wars costume, but we’ve repurposed into dwarf.  It was a sz L, so I cut the sleeves, but the length again as more of a tunic for a dwarf was perfect.  Here he is with as much of his costume as we have so far.  Now I just need to feed him steroids so he can get facial hair and long hair in time….

Is that not the best looking dwarf you’ve ever seen?

Now, next week I will be looking to feature more thrifted costumes or costumes created from thrift score elements!  Show us what you can come up with!

Be sure to visit my cohosts this week to see their costumes and features, too!

Yup best looking dwarf ever. Love Amber’s dresser! How did I miss that on IG? Unfortunately duct tape isn’t thrifty or else I’d share Lilly’s costume 😉

he cracks me up, too! he told me with a smile he was going as a dwarf because he is so small. (he’s the shortest kid in his class, not just boy, but shortest child.). he’s got a sense of humor, that one!

this is an amazing costume. in fact tell him my 17 year old daughter who doesn’t like much of anything these days is totally jealous of his costume. She can tell me all the dwarf’s names by heart.

I can’t WAIT to see all of Sawyer’s dwarf costume – I know it’s going to be fantastic! And fun fact – I was supposed to be out thrifting with Amber when she found that dresser but had to leave early… Who knows, I might have talked her into buying it 😉

i need to find a wig…. then it will pretty much be done. i keep it pretty low key and easy. the one year i did creepy make up on him he looked like he was going to cry…. so i avoid that. i don’t want him scaring, well, himself.

Oh Sawyer, you silly boy! Thanks for the IG love. That dresser was gorgeous, but Nick would have screamed if I got it. I mean I can justify pretty much anything, but there is just no way we could use. I wish it was a coffee table. Mama needs one of those.

Those children books are such a great snag! And I can’t wait to see how Sawyer’s Kili costume comes along! Jesse was considering being a Hobbit, but he’s a little tall…

Sawyer’s dwarf costume was probably the envy of his school and the whole neighborhood! Had to giggle a little when I saw that vest was found in the ladies department!

ha ha! he had to wear a book character from a book he read to school so he was white fang for that, but i thought his dwarf costume was pretty unique and made me proud of him! 🙂
