Before I get into showing you any finds today, I am going to share with you a parenting nugget to save in your back pocket. If you want your kid’s room to be clean, you just buy something for them and surprise them with it, and then tell them they can have it when their room is clean. Bribery? Maybe. Does it work? Yes. In full disclosure that’s what I did to get Emmy to clean up her room for my post today, so alongside our find, I am going to show you the rest of her room so far. Let’s get to the find though because it’s a good one! This post, Thrift Score Thursday: Terrarium Find, features affiliate links. I do make a small amount from sales made through those links and I truly appreciate your help as it is what keeps my blog running!
A couple of weekends ago there was an estate sale going on two streets over. I could have walked there, but I was afraid if I walked I’d find something too awkward to carry home. Emmy ended up coming with me and we drove on over. The garage was open and the house itself was also full of vintage treasures. The very first thing we spotted was one of the things that came home with us. It’s actually the only item that I have a photo of at the moment, so the rest will have to wait. 😉 Anyhow, we spied this black and glass vintage terrarium sitting on the workbench in the garage just calling out to us. You might remember the last time that I shared Emmy’s bedroom we had created a gallery wall around her fish tank which contained frogs. Sadly, the frogs didn’t make it and we think it is due to her bedroom not getting enough heat this winter. Until we can get that looked into, we decided to forgo aquatic pets for the moment. With the aquarium gone for the moment, we thought the terrarium would be a perfect replacement and also make for a fun mother daughter summer project. Here it is on her dresser now.
As I mentioned, we are planning to work on it this summer, so I will share more shots at that time.
Since her room was clean, I thought I’d share with you more photos and updates.
The last time you saw this space, we didn’t yet have a desk chair. I found this set of two modern black shell chairs on Amazon at a great price. (They don’t have the 2-pack currently, just a 4-pack.) I also needed a chair for my own desk in the living room, so it was a great deal.
I also want to mention that since I photographed this space, these inexpensive string lights from Target blew a fuse and won’t light anymore. We found a new LED set on Amazon that we actually love SO much more! They give a really pretty soft glow perfect for a bedroom and they have a remote control.
Last time we were in here, I didn’t show you the other side of her room. We added an Ikea bookcase that we already had and she selected some gray bins from target for the cubbies. One of her “must haves” for this room was a marble tapestry, so we hung that on the wall above as well as an LED photo clip garland for her to hang her polaroids. In the corner to the right we added gold state art from Minted that we had in our last house. We’ve got Maryland and Louisiana, but we need to add North Carolina, too! And of course on top of her bookcase, she has lots of STUFF. This is pared down…
We are still loving that cozy Nicole Miller rug, but let me tell you, it fell on rough times. Emmy came down with a migraine one evening after being out in the hot sun at Sawyer’s soccer tournament. At said tournament, I had bought her an icee…. a red one. Do you know where this is going??!?!? That’s right, my girl lost her icee all over the corner of her room and onto that rug!!! Thanks to a friend who’s MIL is a dry cleaner, I used vinegar and water and I have it mostly out. I just need to go at it again. BUT EEEW. Gross. I am the type of person who vomits when I even think about it, let alone have to see it, smell it… so I was in there cleaning and gagging. Good times.
Now, I have to show you what I held over Emmy’s head in order to motivate her cleaning spree. The lovely people at FabFitFun sent me one of their summer boxes. I planned to share most of it with Emmy, who LOOOOVES all things beauty, spa, and bath related. She was absolutely floored when I told her! Shortly after I showed her the box and its contents, she went into her room and emerged 30 minutes later to let me know her room was clean. Bribery always works. 😉 PS- I will be posting this image on instagram coming soon with a coupon code for $10 off- Stay tuned!
Now tell me- have you been to any estate sales lately? What have you found?
