You guys, this past weekend was a whilwind…. the kids and I traveled to Knoxville, TN to visit my in-laws for the weekend. We planned to arrive Friday (it’s a 7-8 hour trip) and come home Monday. Due to winter storm Octavia taking us by surprise, we had to head home a day earlier. Luckily we crammed a whole lot of fun into our Saturday there, and I even scored at a vintage shop (I’ll be sharing on Thursday). Anyhow, we are home, safe and sound and slightly tired from all the traveling!
I haven’t working on many projects lately (at least that I can share yet) as the weather has been horrendous. And currently I haven’t really “worked” on too many house projects but I have a kajillion on my brain. I have a major itch to change lots of things. If you follow me on instagram, you saw what I was up to yesterday with some furniture rearranging. And as I shared last week, there has also been a lot going on just behind the scenes…. so lately all of these factors leave me feeling like I don’t have much to show you!
But luckily, I’ve got some old projects up my sleeves that I had yet to share, so what better time than now! Today, I am finally showing you this washed dresser with rope pulls that I completed earlier this Fall.
I found this dresser for a ridiculously low price at an auction. By ridiculously low, I mean no one else even bid on it, so you can imagine. It was nothing special, and I wasn’t a fan of the hardware, but I loved the details on the sides and also loved the bargain.
I thought that the spindles on the sides gave it sort of a nautical feel, so I decided to work in that direction. I sanded it all over and wiped it with a damp rag. I mixed a wash by mixing one part General Finishes Antique White with one part water. I also kept a cup of water handy to rinse my brush as needed. A clean rag was also necessary.
I worked quickly in sections, applying the diluted paint with a brush, and then using the rag to wipe in the direction of the grain. I repeated this process until I had covered the entire piece.
I then lightly distressed the edges and details by hand with super fine sandpaper and gave it a coat of clear wax.
For the drawer pulls, I simply cut pieces of rope and tied them in knots on the inside of the drawer to secure them. I glued the knots with hot glue to prevent them from coming undone.
I brought it over to Sweet Clover and staged it….
And here you can see a better look at the new pulls:
This one stuck around for a couple months, but ended up going to a new home at our November sale, when it was all decked out for Christmas!
Right now as I look at the snow outside my window, I am feeling SOOOO ready for Spring! I am ready to dive into some projects that await warmer weather. How about you? Are you ready, too?
