Happy Wednesday! Well…. I made it! I am safely moved over to wordpress. A huge huge huge thank you goes out to Gwen (of The Bold Abode and This Bold Girl) for creating such a beautiful new design for me! Kelly helped me by creating my paint splatter, and then I finished the new logo from there. Gwen rocked the rest of the design. I love its fresh clean look, and love the new colors. I think it suits me. 🙂
Let’s celebrate with a new furniture makeover, shall we?
I found this desk a few weeks back at my favorite summertime place to shop and knew it had potential! When I found it, it had a lovely faux blond finish. You can see it in this shot of my finds that day here:
I thought about refinishing it, but when I sanded the top I discovered it was made out of pressboard, and of course that wouldn’t work. So I got to work lightly sanding the top and sides (which were also pressbaord) with my orbital sander. I sanded the drawers as well. I got to work priming it with a water based primer and gave it 3 coats, sanding lightly in between coats for as smooth of a finish as possible.
I chose General Finishes Snow White for this project because I wanted a modern and clean look. I applied 3 coats of paint and was satisfied with a solid white finish. I gave it a quick coat of General Finishes satin finishing wax.
The hardware was also worn and needed some updating. I cleaned it up a bit using 0000 steel wool just to remove any grime. I then used rub n buff to make them gold again (the brass they originally had was just plating that had faded). I also rub n buffed the feet so they would coordinate with the updated hardware.
In the end, I had a chic white and gold desk I was happy with!
The hardware looks so much cleaner and pops against the white now!
I pretty much love how the gold catches the light, and love the straight lines of this sleek piece.
Here you can see a better look at the newly gilded feet….
If I didn’t just replace our living room desk with a midcentury desk (yeah, I know, I haven’t shared that yet!) I would be tempted to keep this one. But off to Sweet Clover it goes where it will one day meet someone who will love it like I do.
Have a great day!
