Turquoisey-Grayish-Weathered-Distressed Dresser

First of all, thank you so much for the birthday wishes! Sawyer and I had a great day! We made cupcakes and decorated them together- the kids put lots of sprinkles and chocolate chips and marshmallows on them! Sawyer spent the bulk of his day playing with his playmobil knights, and then we went out to dinner with my parents, who surprised me by giving me a circular saw! So it turned out to be a great power-tool birthday. Can’t wait to use my tools on projects! Speaking of projects, while the kids had naptime and quiet time I was able to squeeze in a little work on this dresser I picked up this past weekend off Craigslist for $40.

Don’t you just love the bun feet and teardrop pulls? It was so cute in shape, but was crying out for a cottage style makeover. I had some of my “surfer” teal from Sherwin Williams left, but not enought, so I mixed what was left of that with what was left of “Rapture Blue” and made my own pretty turquoise. I used a blue tinted primer, because I had one on hand, then painted it with my mix of turquoise which gave awesome coverage! I only needed to put on one coat, and I planned to give it a wash anyhow, so I wasn’t worried about perfect coverage. Using the blue primer also helped so there was no white showing anywhere. Once the paint was dry, I distressed the piece by hand around all the edges and then went over it all with Cabot’s dark gray solid color stain. I used a rag to wipe it on, and found it dried rather quickly, so I used a damp rag to wipe off and get the look I wanted. Here is the result!

Cassie! you did NOT do that entire thing during naptime and quiet time! 🙂 Oh yeah, I scrolled up. You got some of it done. It is so pretty. You have so many tricks up your sleeve, I can’t keep them all straight.
I think you need to do a paint/stain/wash/distress post! That way I can save one post instead of ALL of them! 🙂

Great finish you achieved there, missy! Those washes/glazes are tricky for me. I’m sometimes too much of a control freak/perfectionist, and I stress and cuss under my breath the whole time I’m doing it. Love this color!!

Too perfect. I love the dark grey glazed look. It’s so hard to find grey stain here…why is it so? I think I need to come to the US on a shopping expedition soon.

Nice job, I love the ‘grungy’ effect the glaze gave it! (and I do mean grungy in a good way, in case you were wondering! lol)

Do you ever get into trouble mixing custom colours if someone wants another piece matched and you need to mix some more paint?
